He had been sitting on his bed, his back against the headboard with a guitar in his hand. His fingers strummed simple chords restlessly, and though he had tried to think of any ideas for a new song -- his mind came up with nothing. Talk about a serious case of writer's block. He had begun hoping that a source of inspiration would hit him soon, when his phone rang. Nick glanced over at his phone, lighting up with the face of a girl he had become very close with over the past year. His face lit up with a smile as he answered, her peppy voice immediately cheering him up.
"Hello," he answered, his voice steady. "What's going on?"

He grinned. Though they had talked to each other many times over the phone and had gotten used to the idea of calling each other, just because, it always seemed to surprise him how willing she was to always talk to him, even if he wasn't the most exciting person to talk to. But even with Emily, to Nick, silence was not frowned upon, and was welcome. Though with other people, he would've felt awkward sitting in silence, with Emily, they were just content sometimes to know that the other was there.
"I was just trying to come up with lyrics for my new song," he told her, honestly, letting his fingers strum another note. He sighed, shrugging his shoulders. "It's not going so well though," Nick admitted, his voice defeated. He ran his fingers through his hair with his free hand. "I think I need some inspiration."

One thing he loved about Emilia was that she always seemed interested in whatever he was talking about. While a normal person would just shrug off whatever he would say, Emily wouldn't hesitate to ask him about it, always curious to know more, and it made him feel interesting. He held the phone closer to his ear as she asked him about his inspiration.
"You," he said, the simple word just tumbling out of his mouth effortlessly, without warning. Nick's answer surprised even himself, as he was usually composed and thought long and hard about an answer to a question before opening his mouth to say it. He supposed it wasn't his head that was talking at the moment. He seemed to back-track, deciding that it was best not to leave the statement as was. "The people I love," he added.

He had wondered how she had taken his answer, listening closely for anything he could notice, an intake of breath, a slight pause, to see how she would react to his words. For Nick, this was his way of testing the waters, without actually getting wet, constantly wondering how she would feel if he had pushed just a little more, if he had been a little more outright and just said that he was beginning to develop a little more than just a friendship for her. He hadn't quite understood it yet, but he was hoping that as the time passed, he would be able to figure it out.
"Always," he told her, his voice almost like a breath. He ran his fingers along the side of the smooth guitar, a small smile on his face as he thought about all the moments that inspired his songs. Though they weren't professional, they were deeply personal and close to his heart. "It's mostly the little moments that inspire me," he confessed, his mind only on the beautiful girl he was on the phone with right now. "A lot of the things I don't say, I write into music."

"Are you asking me to serenade you?" Nick asked, amused. He didn't sound mocking, nor rude, but teasing. He laughed lightly, before answering seriously. "Once I finish this song I'm writing -- completely, I'll sing it for you, I promise," he said, full of truthfulness that he hoped she believed him. He reached forward towards the notepad where he had scribbled random lyrics and words on, though it hadn't exactly formulated a song yet, it helped him think -- brainstorm. He couldn't help himself as he wrote Emilia's name on the top of the page, just so the next time he cracked out the notepad, he'd remember who his focus what -- as if he'd ever forget.
He realized that he hadn't seen Emilia as frequently during this summer as he had wanted. Maybe seeing her would help his words flow better, he wondered. "Hey," Nick murmured, a small smile beginning to form on his face again. "I'd like to see you this summer. Is there any day you're free?"

He grinned as he realized that she was just as excited to see him as he was for her. Though it had been summer for a few weeks, it surprised him that they hadn’t hung out yet – they had gotten really close over the past year! Nick remembered when he first met her – it was through a mutual friend, he had found her sweet, and they hadn’t spoken at first, she was a little shy and he never was one to speak more than required. But getting to know her was the best decision he had ever made. “Saturday sounds good to me,” he told her. His grip on his phone tightened. “There’s a fourth of July Beach Bash on Saturday, do you want to go?”

Nick lets his fingers slip along the strings again, the sound echoing in the empty room. He smiled as she agreed to his idea, and though he felt as if he could scream out of happiness, he tried to keep his voice normal as he replied. "I could pick you up," he suggested, brightly.
