life
Adrian is a weird one. His home life has been a lie for 12 years, and a hell for the rest of the time he spent with his father. For the first 12 years of his life, he was happy. He lived in southern California. His mom loved his dad, nobody was cheating on anyone, and he didn’t have a half-brother. What he didn’t know is that all of that actually happened. His dad had another secret family who he had deserted, consisting of a woman, and her son, Ashton McAllister. Adrian’s mother was kept in the dark until Adrian turned twelve; that was the year that everything went to shit. His mother had her own affair, but instead of just having another child, she divorced her husband, cut off all ties with her family, and created a new life. Unfortunately for Adrian, that new life did not include him. In result, Adrian grew up to hate his mother. She was, after all, the one who did wrong, as far as he knew, and that made her a lying, cheating whore. And that also made all girls untrustworthy for Adrian. Adrian grew up a womanizer, getting the best of women since he realized that he was as skilled as his father when it came to seducing them. It wasn’t until he turned eighteen that his mother came back into his life.
When she did, it was a whirlwind for Adrian. See, he had never known about the other family, about his father’s initial infidelity, and how much his mother had been hurt. Did it make what she did right? No, but it did give Adrian what he had always wanted: a reason to forgive and love his mother once again. Their reunion was brief, however, as Adrian was sent, by his father, the new outlet of Adrian’s anger, to the east coast to finish his senior year. Basically, Papa McAllister was kicking him out. Adrian did finish his last year of high school there, which gave him enough time to meet the lovely Dawn Carmichael. Long story short: Boy meets girl. Boy and Girl and really attracted to each other. Boy and Girl decide to date. Things get serious. Boy and Girl decide to move back to California, where both hail, together. As in living together. Things get really serious. And then some old flame of Adrian’s came around and fucked it up. Long story short. Dawn moved to Maryland, leaving Adrian stewing until he decided to kind of sort of follow her, but not really he’s over it now. One thing is for certain, he’s definitely never going to get serious with a girl again. Right?
Now, Adrian is adjusting to his new surroundings here, starting college soon, and all the like. Drama is bound to ensue whenever Adrian is around.

The apartment was feeling even emptier now that Erika had gone from it. Adrian was seriously considering on getting some sort of animal to fill the void. He'd gotten so invested in the idea that he was currently on the internet, researching animals that could possibly make the apartment feel warmer. The apartment itself wasn't empty; there was furniture, it had nice decor, and it was full of the essentials: entertainment system, lots of food, etc. But it still felt like he was alone, which he was. But it had never felt this tangible before, and he’d been living practically alone since his Dad had checked out emotionally. Maybe it had something to do with the way things had gone down that night at Dawn's. Remembering this event, Adrian dived into his thoughts for about the billionth time; he had spent what felt like hours replaying what happened in his mind's eye, and he was finding himself torn between emotions. There were so many things that he had wanted to feel, but whenever he tried to feel them, he felt like an asshole. Why should he be happy that someone else was getting fucked over? Adrian knew that there was no way Dawn would be able to hide what had happened from Andrew. She read easier than a book, and Adrian had a feeling that it wasn’t just because he was an empath. Adrian leaned back in his chair and covered his face with his hands, feeling another wave of his own guilt. He felt like what his half-brother’s mother must have felt like after ruining the Mcallister’s marriage. Of course, things weren’t has bad in this case, seeing as Andy and Dawn weren’t married, nor did they have a young child, but Adrian still felt like he was betraying what he most stood for: fidelity.
That was what he’d hated his mother for, after all. And recently, apparently even his father hadn’t been able to keep it in his pants. What was the problem? Was there no one on the planet who could be satisfied with just one person? And what was Adrian’s deal? He’d been picking the wrong women since he was twelve, and no matter how hard he tried to change this fatal flaw, he’d found himself again connected with someone who was probably toxic to him. But what was he going to do? If Andrew had broken up with her like he suspected, Adrian couldn’t think for himself. He had to think for her. No doubt she’d be in shambles, and people always did the strangest things when they thought that no one cared. The immense emotions that had coursed through her that night were like red flags in Adrian’s mind, constant reminders that Dawn wasn’t able to stand on her own. He had to be there, and it wasn’t like he didn’t care for her; he couldn’t just turn off his feelings all of a sudden. Still, he felt sick with his own regret. If only he’d never met her, or never tried to pursue her despite her relationship status, then they would both be in a better place. Her, with her wonderful boyfriend and him, with some girl he could forget the next morning. Why couldn’t Adrian stick to what he knew best? Girls for a night—that’s how he functioned. Dragging out some painful experience was only what made Adrian feel vulnerable, and he hated feeling vulnerable. Or maybe he was some sort of glutton or masochist, seeing as he’d done this multiple times already.
Despite all of it, though, Adrian couldn’t blame Dawn. He couldn’t find it in himself to get over the fact that HE’D done the instigating. HE’D been the one to tempt her, acting like the reptile that had captured Eve’s attention and tainted her from the inside out. Adrian was getting more pissed every second he thought of it, so he stood from his desk and walked from his bedroom to his kitchen, choosing to open the fridge. He peered into it, not exactly feeling hungry, but wanting to do something that would keep his mind off of her. Adrian looked up, seeing a bag of Doritos. Okay, whatever. He closed the door, grabbed the Doritos, and then sat down on his couch. A quick motion resulted in the television being switched onto whatever was on Comedy Central. A few minutes into the show, Adrian began to feel a certain degree of self-hatred that he hadn’t ever felt before. At first, he thought he was just overreacting again about what had happened, but he wizened up the stronger the feeling got. It wasn’t him, after all. Adrian stood, quickly muting the television and putting the bag of chips away. He could feel Dawn outside his door before he heard her knocks, and before he even tried to open the door, he put up the walls he’d been working on since the other night. It was a new concept to him, but he had to do it around Dawn. A few internet searches and a night of practice and he had been able to do it well enough to keep out the worst of her emotions. He could still feel that she was in a horrible state. Adrian took a deep, calming breath and pulled the door open and letting his eyes take her in.
Even with his guard up, he could feel her depression and it threatened his state of calm. He could see her eyes were red, and he could smell the alcohol from her. At first, Adrian didn’t know what to do. He wanted to hug her and tell her it would be okay, he wanted to kiss her and tell her to love him instead, and he wanted to close the door and pretend like she hadn’t been there all in the same moment. It was more confusing than her emotions had been that night, because this was him being indecisive, and it wasn’t something he could just push away from him. He blinked, feeling the imperative need to say something, anything, but all he could manage was to say, ”Dawn…” brokenly. Finally, he reached out and grabbed her thin shoulders carefully, pulling her close to him so he could wrap his arms around her. In the end, he knew what she needed was not some other guy to make her feel like some kind of whore, but someone who would just hold her. And for the first time in a long time, all he wanted to do was hold the girl, like in some cheesy romantic drama named Dawn Carmichael’s Life. Adrian stayed like that for a few moments, the close proximity forcing him to feel her emotions, and fight back with his own. He couldn’t help put push her dark feelings away from them both. He didn’t want to control her emotions as forcefully as he had to, but he had to do something with them, because they certainly weren’t coming into this emotionless apartment where they could stay for ages. Adrian finally released her, now that she would probably be feeling a little more stable. He kept his hand on hers, leading her into the apartment, and closing the door behind him.
Adrian led her to the couch and sat her down, and then left her for a second to visit his kitchen. He came back with a glass of water, hoping that the fresh liquid would help her sober up a little. Now that Dawn was with him, she didn’t need something that killed her insides to forget, because as long as she wanted him to make her feel better, he would. Adrian wouldn’t be able to leave her in this state even if he’d really wanted to, which he knew now that he’d never felt that way. He handed her the water, and then sat down next to her. A weird silence fell around him before he finally mustered the courage to say, ”What happened?” as if he didn’t already know.
