When Lena woke up the house was all too quiet. Her first reaction was to think she'd somehow died or that she'd gone deaf. Given that screaming was so common in her house these days, it was a shock to wake up to absolute silence. Her brown eyes scanned the ceiling of her house and she flexed her fingers one at a time before sitting up slowly. She wasn't dead, that was for sure. A soft sigh escaped her lips as she got up from her bed and trudged down the hallway.
She peeked into her parents' bedroom and saw the bed hadn't been slept in. Immediately panic set in, thinking her mother had left her with her father yet again and she was doomed to be his personal batting post. Quietly as she dared she crept into the living room and saw her dad passed out on the couch with an assortment of empty liquor bottles laying around him. She breathed a sigh of relief that he seemed to be breathing. She quietly got a pot of coffee started and headed back to her room to get dressed for school. After she managed to wrestle on some clothes and get the knots out of her hair, she stuck in her earbuds and made herself some toast before running out to the bus stop. When the bus slowed down to pick her up she defiantly raised her chin and headed up the steps, flopping down into a seat in the very back.
On the ride to school she blared music to try to keep her mind from focusing on anything except the pain that threatened to consume her this morning. She wrapped her arms around her knees and pressed her back against the window of the bus, closing her eyes. She stayed in this same position until she arrived at school. Taking a deep breath she rose to her feet and followed the flood of students into the school building, doing her best to ignore the whispers she imagined she saw on people's lips and the glances she was sure were directed at her. It seemed like the world was against her and her paranoia was beginning to eat away at her. She finally managed to get to her first class after a quick stop at her locker and sat down at a desk in the very back. She hoped no one would bother her today, because she was a ticking time-bomb just waiting to explode. She sat with her earbuds still blasting loud, angry punk and her fingers tapping anxiously on the desktop.

Theo rolled out of bed fifteen minutes later than he should have, putting him dreadfully behind schedule. Bleary eyed, he wandered into his bathroom to stare at himself in his mirror. His already-huge dark hair was sticking up and out in even more ways than usual. A shower would put it right, but now he didn't have time, so he quickly ran a comb through it as he pulled some mostly-clean clothes off his floor. Shrugging them on over his head, he ran through the house, grabbing a pop-tart and his skateboard as he went. If he didn't get going soon, he'd be late and if he had to hear his teachers whine anymore, he would be in an even worse mood.
The day was hot and bright already, making Theo use extra care when dodging traffic and pedestrians on his way to school. It was still early, so things weren't too busy, but it still wasn't simple to weave through traffic while trying to unwrap a Pop-Tart. He stepped off his board in front of the school with more time to spare than he thought, so he shoved his skateboard unceremoniously in his locker and grabbed what he needed for his first class. He grinned at a good number of people in the hallway and only stopped to talk once, which seemed to be a record, as people just seemed to like Theo, although he didn't always feel the same. Last night, though, he had been up for the better part of the night playing a video game that just came out, and he didn't have either sleep or a good breakfast under his belt.
Theo made it to his first class with more time to spare, the room was mostly empty, except, of course, for someone sitting directly to the right of his favorite desk. The back of the class was Theo's favorite place when he was in one of his slacker moods, and this was definitely a slacker day. A small, tinny sound was coming from the back of the room, like someone had their earbuds turned up way too loud. Theo made a face to himself and made his way to the desk, sitting down easily and propping his feet up. Giving the girl next to him a slightly skeptical look, he decided that she needed some cheering up. Leaning over, he poked her in the arm and said loudly, “Are you trying to go deaf by the time you're thirty, or is your music just so wonderful that you decided to share it with the rest of the world?” He didn't think twice about his comment until after he said it, as usual, but what's done is done, he decided with an internal shrug.
