ALL I EVER DID WAS LOOK UP TO YOU
Most people don’t get along with their siblings. It’s quite a common thing for someone to talk about how annoying their sibling is, or talk about how much they hate them. That has never been the case for Naya. She’d always been extremely close to her two brothers and especially looked up to her older one, Mav. He had always been there for her, ever since she was little. Their home life wasn’t great. In fact, it wasn’t even good. It was awful. Their mother was an alcoholic and their father just got up and left when things were too tough to handle. She’d always resented him for that. A real man would never leave his family. She resented her mother for being so weak. It didn’t matter. They were out of her life and it all made her respect her older brother, who had stepped in as her father figure from the time that she was a little girl, more and more every day. She wasn’t completely honest with him at times regarding her lifestyle, partying, or her “relationships” with guys sometimes, and though she felt bad about it, she didn’t dare disappoint him.
Mav practically had her on a pedestal and she wasn’t about to tarnish his image of her. It had been brought up in conversation at times. He wasn’t totally oblivious—Naya was well known at school, and people talked. But whenever he’d mention something he heard from one of his friends or one of his class mates, she’d put on her most convincing, innocent face and deny. ”They’re just saying that because I was a bitch to them,” or ”They’re just trying to start drama with me because I’m a cheerleader.” Mav always seemed to be satisfied with those answers and wouldn’t bring it up. Both of her answers were plausible, so he had no reason to not believe his little sister. That was why Naya tried to tread carefully when she knew something could potentially come back to her brother. She was a pretty wild girl, but she had boundaries—no hooking up with her brothers friend, class mates, or anyone who could just go up to him and tell him that his little sister had been doing some pretty grown up things with someone he knew.
Knowing her brother, he probably wouldn’t believe that his sister would do any of those things, but he would probably knock out anyone who even dared disrespect his sister’s name. Naya avoided those types of situations. It would make it harder to cover up her tracks, and she wasn’t willing to let anything come between her and the person she loved most in her life. She didn’t really care about her cheerleading friends, her acquaintances in other cliques, or anybody else she knew. Her main priorities when it came down to it were her older brother and young brother, who was still young and needed guidance.
The fact that she was so close with her brothers was precisely why she actually enjoyed going out with them. Today she was out with Mav at the health and beauty store. In reality, she had dragged him there, because he didn’t want to go if she was going to do “girly” things. But with a little pushing and pouting, he gave in and agreed to go if Naya drove, which she happily did in her shiny black Volkswagen beetle. Once they got in the store she dragged him around looking at all the makeup and lotions. She spotted a somewhat familiar girl and smirked. ”Didn’t you hook up with her like a month ago? Aaaawkward…” she said, dragging the word out, giggling. Just because her brother didn’t know about her ways didn’t mean she didn’t know about his.
