Athena was five years old when her parents took her to America. All she remembers of Greece is the stark white of the houses and the deep blue of the ocean. America, in comparison, always seemed so dirty. Athena knew why her parents wanted to leave Greece--America was where people made it big, made something of themselves. They never did though. Mr and Mrs Ballios worked hard at what they did--owning a small Mediterranean restaurant in the city--but they never did better than just scraping by. You see, the Ballios thought that Americans were "better" than them somehow, so they were quiet, polite, and friendly, but that's not what you need to make money here. They were never pushy enough or bold enough. Athena hated to see her parents bending to the will of white landlords and greedy customers, never standing up for themselves. She came to be more like the Americans--strong and bold, smart-mouthed and confident enough to survive the little ethnic ghetto that she grew up in. She worked hard, getting amazing grades, but hated school. Her favorite part of the day was taking free dance classes at the local YMCA. She poured her whole heart into dancing, and it showed from day one. By the time she was ten, Athena was working in the back of the restaurant to make money and did chores for the tenants in her apartment building, saving money to take real dance classes. By the time she was 13, it was obvious that she was destined to be a dancer. Athena worked her ass off to get a scholarship at an elite arts high school, and when she graduated she was admitted full ride into a dance program. Now she lives on her own in the dorms, though she still goes home to help her parents out pretty often.
