Elizabeth Jane Stanley. Sixty-three. Drama teacher. Wife of forty-five years. Mother of six. Grandmother of four. The woman who demands to be called anything but her first name--E, El, Ellie, Liz, Lizzie, Beth, EJ... the options are endless. The woman who doesn't act her age--with an attention span of a five-year-old and the sex drive of a teenage boy. The woman who insists on saying Maryland in two words: Mary Land. The woman who teaches but doesn't actually teach. The woman who has a disregard for all rules, including many of her own. The woman people want to be friends with because she's just so awesome, or so she's been told. The woman who smokes and won't think before offering a student a cigarette--always Marlboro Lights. The woman who will admit to having smoked things aside from cigarettes--and who will not hesitate to do it again. The woman who will go out for drinks with her colleagues and stumble in at odd hours of the night, waking up her husband and asking for a late-night rendezvous. The woman who lives each day to its fullest and thoroughly enjoys life. Yes, this is Ellie.
Meet the town busybody, the jack of all trades but master of none. With sixty-three years under her belt, it should come as no surprise that she knows a little bit about everything--and it should come as no surprise to anyone when she starts rambling off random facts. People's first impressions are that she is a ditsy blonde, but she is actually quite intelligent. She just chooses to act that way because it amuses people. Just sit down and have a chat with her, and you'll see. With the wealth of knowledge, it should comes as no surprise that she is understanding of most people and situations, and she's great at giving advice. But don't let these moments of subtly fool you. She's a firecracker. Her outgoing personality affords her the opportunities to be extremely talkative and loud. She will talk your ear off until you either leave her standing there in the middle of the conversation or ask her to be quiet--and let us not forget that she has a tendency to lose her train of thought mid-sentence or switch topics at random. Yes, she is that person. She is the person that you cannot help but to love even though you can't stand her. She is the person you cannot believe you are friends with, but you are friends with her because she is a great friend. Ellie makes friends for life. She does not have a "falling out" when things don't go quite according to plan; she always goes out of her way to make sure things are okay in the end. Mrs. Stanley is not particularly interested in fashion, but she does wear nice clothes (only because people buy them for her) and because the principals have complained about her wardrobe in the past. She has no shame and does not care what others think of her. She does not consider herself particularly attractive, but she will not think twice before wearing a low-cut shirt. She will also not think twice before talking about menopause, sex, personal experiences, or how attractive someone (man or woman) is. She is the type of person that is admired by many, hated by few. As for her teaching abilities, I suppose you can say that she's not the best teacher in the world. Actually, she spends more time talking about random things in class than teaching, but her students all seem to learn. She is very hands-on when it comes to her classes, but she never makes anyone participate that doesn't want to. For this reason, her class has become one that people take for credit and not to learn something interesting. That... and they just want to be in Ellie's class.
As you can imagine, Ellie will have lots of friends and very few enemies. She will have friends that she sees on a regular basis, those that she sees mostly when she visits places (like stores, restaurants, etc.) and then her work friends. And then of course, there will be colleagues and students. There will be people who look up to her, admire her, always ask her for advice...that kind of thing. And then, of course, there will be the enemies, but I doubt there will be too many. And last, but not least, are the lovers. Ellie has been married for forty-five years, so there won't be any freaky cougar romances; however, it could be fun to have people think she's attractive or flirt with her because they can... you know, those weirdos who are really interested in older women? Ellie won't hesitate to flirt back because that's just who she is. But anyway, let's get to plotting!
