He'd tried to calm himself down but he'd had a red bull before he'd left and it had been the third one for the day, his right arm was shaking, but his focus was on something else. He was a little worried of what might happen today, the pterodactyls were proof of that, and he was 99.8% sure this would all be a practical joke on him. Goosey would arrive and they'd talk about what she was coming to talk about and everything would be going fine and they'd laugh about all the misunderstandings and then suddenly everyone would jump out and laugh at how stupid he was for believing her. That was how it was going to go, he was sure of it. He got a head start while waiting for Goosey to arrive and sussed out all the hiding spots everyone could be in, luckily for them, nobody had come early. They were probably going to hide while the important conversation was taking place and she'd have all his attention. Well, he wasn't going to let them win... not this time, his attention would be focused all on them. They could try and sneak up on them but Johnny wasn't going down without a fight.
He'd decided to meet Goosey at the school even though it was a Thursday night and there were plenty of other places to be, he had used his brain when thinking of a place to meet. He really didn't want people interfering, even though now he knew their plan, so the school had been the perfect choice. What kind of kids go to the school on Thursday nights? None of Johnny's friends, that was for sure, so nobody could interfere in what whatever was about to happen. His stomach twisted and he was sure the pterodactyls were breeding in there. He hoped they'd disappear when Goosey arrived and he hoped she'd turn up soon. He wondered what she was going to wear or if she'd put any effort in because she was going to see him. He laughed it off and looked at himself, he'd asked Chicken Man for some help and the kind of clothes he wore on dates with Zoe. Not that this was a date because Johnny now knew it was a whole big practical joke but he'd put on his good chinos and a clean shirt just incase it had been a date of sorts. He didn't mind that much because now at least he'd look good for everyone jumping out to laugh at him. He'd left his cap at home, Chicken Man had told him Zoe hated him wearing caps when they went out, Johnny had even put some product in his hair to look nicer. He didn't like the feel of it, his hair was all stiff now and felt uncleaner than usual which was funny because he actually had showered today.
He felt kind of silly looking back on all the effort he'd put in for Goosey, it made him feel really stupid to think it was all for him to be a laughing stock. He didn't even really know what he wanted to come out of the situation if it hadn't been a joke because he was sure he'd be a crappy boyfriend. He hated sitting around and watching movies and "cuddling", there was so many better things they could be doing and he was sure Goosey wouldn't want to be a part of any of that and yet he was still dressed up nicely for her and waiting to be humiliated. He put it down to them as being friends first, they were really good friends. She was the only girl he treated like a bro, well, as bro as a girl could get. He had other friends that were girls like Audrey or Scar, but things with them were different, they weren't like Goosey and that's what he liked about her. If he had to be completely honest, he wasn't thinking of all the repercussions that would have happened if Goosey wasn't joking around. He was only really thinking about how much she'd want him to cuddle for and if she'd let him kiss her with tongue and they never actually had kissed before, it could have been really bad! What if he had gone along with the whole thing and agreed he liked her too, that would probably mean they were dating, and he hadn't even kissed her yet. She could be really bad, all saliva and no tongue, she could be really bitey...he'd have no idea. He was going to be sure next time someone decided to like him, joke or not, he would make sure they had kissed before he thought about anything else or it would be all confusing like now.
He took a seat on one of the benches by the outdoor pool and decided to send her a text to let her know that's where he'd decided to park his behind. It would make it harder for everyone to hide if there was a giant covered pool in front of him, you couldn't exactly subtly jump out of the water without him seeing or hearing you first. He thought about just going home, he really didn't feel like being humiliated. He'd gotten his history test back today and it had been pretty bad, the teacher had kept him behind to talk to him and he'd have to visit Audrey again during the week. He really hated wasting her time with his stupidness, it was becoming a problem. He didn't like being a burden on anyone and that's what he felt like with Audrey. He wondered if he was a burden on Goosey or Zip or Chicken Man. He probably wasn't a burden, more like a target for Goosey and he wondered if Zippy or Chicken Man knew about the joke. Chicken Man would have told him after Johnny had asked all the questions unless he was too stoned out of his mind to use his brain properly, which scared him a little from all the advice he'd given and Zippy was way too nice. He would have told Goosey not to be mean and forced them all to sit down and watch something together and he probably would have fallen asleep like he always did. Johnny couldn't think of anyone else that would join in the prank and that scared him a little, he had no idea what Goosey was hiding up her sleeve and he liked to know what was going on. Surprises just weren't fun especially when they were going to be at his expense.
He decided to pull the cover off of the pool and take off his vans and dip his feet in the water while he waited. She would be here soon and everything would uncover itself and the pterodactyls would disappear and he could go home, smoke some more and order a pizza and forget about the whole thing. He had a quick thought of where he would be if Goosey hadn't transferred to Manchester, it was a strange thought and it scared him that he would never actually know where he would be. He knew he wouldn't be waiting by the school pool at 9 o'clock at night to be humiliated by anyone else but her. Her poking fun at him, although it was mean sometimes, it was just the way they interacted. He'd thought about how things would have gone if they did decide something was to happen between them but he guessed he could forget all those thoughts now and the pterodactyls seemed to ease off after thinking about all of that less. He could see someone coming in the distance, he didn't really bother to check if it was Goosey or a security guard, he kind of just wanted to go home. luce shuffled off of her bed, jumping over toward the mirror on the opposite side of the room. as she stood in front of it, pulling the hem of her shirt down and biting her lip worriedly, she wondered if she looked decent enough. if it had been any other time, she would've pulled on a large sweatshirt and a pair of tights and left it at that - she usually didn't have to dress up for johnny. but this time was different. this time it wasn't just them being stupid. this time, it was different. and no matter how many times luce rolled the idea around in her head - that they weren't just going to be friends anymore, possibly, if she was lucky which she figured she wasn't - she couldn't shake the nervousness out. she pulled at the hem of the black, draped shirt once more, pulled down the bottoms of her jeans, and flipped the bottoms up, and then pulled on a pair of toms in the corner. shortly afterward, she scrambled across the room, picking up her pad and pen and her bag, before stuffing them in the small leather pouch and shoving it over her shoulder. ben was out, so she left him a note, telling him where she was and hopefully when she would be back. and with that, she set off.
luce couldn't drive. she also couldn't skate. or bike. it was actually pretty sad. her parents had taught her how to ride when she was seven, but her bike had gotten beaten up and she'd never bothered to replace it - if she didn't use it, what was the point? it was times like this when she was annoyed she couldn't do anything. it was pretty breezy out, enough to make her huddle as she clambered along the street sidewalk, under the shade of the opaque colored lights. her arms, thin and slender, were folded across her chest, her small-set shoulders hunched forward as the breeze licked her pink cheeks, pushing her blonde hair behind her ears. she jumped over the cracks, refusing to step on them simply out of boredom, and tried to ignore the various thoughts running through her brain. they were mostly about johnny, which actually sucked. she awkwardly fumbled along, though, her hazel eyes trapped on the gray, slab, concrete in front of her, as she tried to concentrate on anything else. every time a car drove by, her ivory head would whip up, latch to the vehicle, before drifting wearily back to the concrete slab in front of her. the minutes seemed to drag into hours.
it felt like years later when she finally reached the pool. and suddenly, as she pulled up the building, she suddenly felt the butterflies. right in her gut. she almost wanted to turn straight around and walk all the way back, but she knew she couldn't. so instead, she sucked in a breath, and pushed her hands down to her sides (to pretend that she wasn't cold), and walked through the gates. her eyes, hazel and nervous, scouted the area, searching for him, and she noticed him on the other side of the pool. she walked around the pool, quickly so that she wasn't as cold, and then moved around in his view, still walking toward him. she raised a hand as she neared, waving awkwardly and pinching her face embarrassingly. she halted a little bit front of him, feeling rather awkward for a moment (she wasn't sure whether she should hug him or not), before she finally came to her senses and pulled her pad and pen out of her bag. her hands were shaking as she wrote, from the nerves, and she discreetly tried to hide it, before holding the pad to his face so he could read what was written there. hi. with a haphazard smiley face. great. The realization that the most serious conversation he was probably ever going to have with Luce was about to occur was enough to send anyone running and although his feet were in full motion (swaying back and forth in the pool) he wasn't going anywhere and his butt remained stuck to the side of the pool. The walk over to him felt like an eternity and Johnny wasn't sure if he should get up or stay seated or even what to say. She raised her hand in a slight wave so he mirrored the greeting and decided to stay seated. There was still the thought of this all being a practical joke lingering in the back of his head so he didn't want to seem too eager to see her if there was an audience hiding and waiting for him to embarrass himself.
He didn't know what to say to her at first so he remained silent and waited for her to come to him. He didn't want to stare at her and he tried to look around, at the water and the surrounding school buildings, but his eyes kept coming back to focus on her arrival and he could feel his cheeks begin to redden. He almost dived into the pool just to sink to the bottom and die of embarrassment and he really hoped that she wouldn't notice. Johnny was never shy or nervous and he really wanted to make sure it seemed that way. He tried to hide it with a smile as wide as he could muster up but he probably resembled a clown or something. He kept the stupid expression anyway because a clown was better than some sissy who got nervous around girls. He decided that he'd wait for her to make the first step in conversation after all, she was the one who initiated this whole situation so she could be the one who started it.
He'd had girls tell him they'd liked him before, he may be crazy and hyperactive and childish, but he was definitely not boyfriend material and he could list the amount of proper girlfriends he had on one had. He was more of a casual sort of guy, no strings attached, and when they started getting needy or wanting more, he'd let them down softly. It wasn't that he didn't like them because sometimes he really did but as soon as he became a boyfriend they lost all interest in him and it always ended badly. The one relationship that came to mind was Scar and it still made him cringe a little. He didn't want that to happen with Luce, their relationship was scary and painful enough, could he really be a boyfriend? And to her? He could feel the smile slowly fading from his face but luckily she'd pulled out her notepad, scrawled the first words and shoved it in front of his face and waited for him to reply.
"hi. C:"
Johnny stared at it for a while, for once in his life speechless, he could hear the millions of things he could be saying and the billions of things that he really shouldn't be saying and he was trying to make sure the right words spewed out of his mouth before he opened them. He was still uneasy about this whole setup and it felt like a thousand eyes were judging him from the shadows. He wasn't going to happily greet her the way he wanted to or normally did, buoyant and happily, maybe even pulling her into one of his bear hugs that she'd hit at him to escape from. He was going to go with a blunt approach to show that he was serious and didn't want to mess around, he wasn't going to be played, not today.
"HEY LUCE!"
Ok, so that plan hadn't worked out and he'd actually startled himself, booming his greeting, and listening to it resonate over and over again. He awkwardly ruffled his hair and patted beside him for her to take a seat. He was at another mind blank and you could literally hear the crickets chirping and his feet slicing through the water. He couldn't keep his feet still though or his mind, which was racing, and he'd even started tapping his fingers lightly on the pools edge, if she didn't think he was crazy now all of this movement and the bewildered look in his eye would definitely convince her there was something wrong with him.
"The waters actually pretty nice if you want to dip your feet in. I've been kicking around in here for a while. Well, not that long, actually...it's not like I've been waiting for you for ages or something. I don't like you that much! I mean, I do...I mean..."
He need to think of a game plan and stick to it. He was overheating and the last thing he wanted to do was get sweaty and red and awkward. If this was a trick, he'd definitely embarrassed himself enough already and wanted them to jump out and humiliate him, so then he could just go home and bury himself under his blankets with his headphones in and blow his eardrums into the next millennium. He wanted the conversation to change, he didn't want to discuss what they'd come here to discuss just yet, he had the feeling like he was going to throw up or run away or worse.
"I mean look at the moon tonight! IT'S MASSIVE!" [/style][STYLE=font-family:georgia; font-size:13px; line-height:14px; color:#282828; letter-spacing:-2px; margin-left:13px; text-transform:uppercase; margin-top:14px; margin-bottom:40px; opacity:.4]template by oxymoron of back to neverland[/style] |
