life
"you're a perrill. that means you never back down." that is what tony perrill told his only kid and daughter, chase, on her first day of kindergarten. since the age of six those words have remained imprinted on her brain. her dad always knew best, that is how chase lived. she had no mom. after gifting her high school sweetheart with a kid she decided that the role of a mother was not fit for her. she left chase and tony on their own, heading anywhere that wasn't ocean city and never looking back. tony was determined to make his daughter everything that her mother had never been. his daughter would make him proud and be his reason to wake up in the morning. imagine the pressure, knowing that your dad's happiness depended on how well you turned out. chase did everything she was told, followed everything her father laid out for her, and she turned out to be perfection, in her father's eyes at least. she believed in herself, had potential, and seemed to be completely solid. like her dad, she had a knack with athletics. she pushed him to follow his dreams of opening his own sports store and that meant that chase needed to keep on going with sports. was it what she wanted? no. would it keep her father happy? yes.

she had forgotten how much of a joy josh dale was when it came to engaging in conversation. he was as blunt as anyone could possibly be, making conversations with him pleasantly refreshing and wholly realistic. sugar coating did not exist with him, and for that jensen had come to form an opinion of him that was one of admiration and one hundred percent respect. their opinions did not always come out to be the same and the two of them were able to speak their minds without any violence or grudges suddenly computing into the equation. she found no reason to diss josh for his comfortableness of being able to say the things that came to his mind in an open fashion. if anything, she felt that it was more of a reason for her to associate herself with him, since it urged her to do the same and actually be mature about the way she handle the opinions of others. he may have not been aware of it but he actually taught her lessons that no one else would have been able to try and enforce onto her. he was also someone who shared her belief that ice cream could be enjoyed all times of the year. it was not only a summer treat, prohibited from being consumed during the winter months. for that very reason jensen decided she now liked josh a bit more than she did before. “someone who understands!” she exclaimed, giddy now. never before had she met someone who also thought that ice cream was a year round treat. she shrugged her shoulders, thinking about how much she had just enjoyed that ice cream cone.
her understanding of a busy schedule did not stem for the fact that she could relate to josh wanting to focus solely on school. what it came from was how dedicated she was to savate and how much of her schedule the sport took up. she imagined that his desire to study was related to her desire to focus on nothing but the french version of kickboxing. from what he had told her, which was only a skimpy explanation of the real deal, he was doing something with english and medicine. honestly, jensen had tuned out after realizing how much time and pure desire josh was using to drive himself towards finishing out his last year of college. her own studying habits and concentration on school would never compare to josh and how he pored over his school work. she could never think of feeling the need to drop nearly all of your life only so it would enable you to focus more on studying and achieving near perfect grades. all she could do was commend josh for his perseverance. “hardly. i haven’t broke a sweat yet. this year is going to be a breeze,” she confidently said to josh, waving her hand carelessly around in the air. she was being honest too. all of her classes were fairly easy and she was finding that she wasn’t feeling the crunch that seemed to be stressing all of the other seniors out. josh seemed to be stressed too, with wanting to quit his job and the anticipation of finally being exposed to the real world in less than a month. jensen believed that she could feel how that would be an anxiety causer. jensen nodded, saying, “being a student is a job itself. your boss would understand, i think.” it was probably the wisest thing she had said all week.
jensen had savate to consist of the greater part of her life, meaning that it would never really be pushed on the side. she acted casual about her near obsession for the sport to keep her friends from being alarmed. the amount of time she practiced her fighting strategies and sparring with her father would have made any sane person laugh at how outrageous it seemed. savate was her thing, just like medicine and bluntness was josh’s or being questionably gay was yeager’s. to each is their own and all that shit, was what jensen would say to anyone who thought they were entitled to question her. “meaning that it is my complete life and it’s nothing that has changed,” she corrected herself, sheepishly grinning at josh. with a subtle threat being thrown out jensen promptly held her hands out, showing she surrendered before anything had yet to happen. josh was not someone who she wished to see the bad side of, she knew better than that. “i’m stupid, but i know better than to mess with you, josh dale,” jensen solemnly said to him. he would not be a target or distantly thought about whenever a prank popped into her mind. it just would not happen. now he was another soul just as bored as herself. fulfilling her ice cream need had been the only thing on her agenda, leaving the rest of her evening clear. “there is nothing else. at all. except now i think i am hanging out with my dear fire friend,” jensen chirped, smiling harmlessly at josh.
