Her family acted like it was, but it was something Natalie actually enjoyed. Granted, she knew that her family didn't have all the money in the world to spend, but she actually needed to go shopping today.
Okay, maybe she didn't need to. Perfume wasn't quite a necessity. Still, she never bought designer perfume. It was way too expensive and not worth the money. Why spend $50 on Viva La Juicy when you could spend $15 on Sweet Pea from Bath and Body Works? Everyone she knew liked the sweet pea scent and she always got compliments on it. It wasn't her favorite scent though. If she could, she'd wear the pumpkin spice hand sanitizer as perfume. Sweet pea was nice, but pumpkin spice? It was wonderful. Natalie always bought a bunch of the little $1 hand sanitizers in the fall to stock up for the year. Even if it was a perfume though, she knew she couldn't wear it year round. It was definitely a fall scent.
Natalie stepped into Bath and Body Works and gave herself a mission. Okay, Nat. In and out. You only need body spray, she told herself as she made her way around the store. Even if she was only here for her sweet pea, she couldn't help but wander around and smell all the lotions, soaps, and candles. Picking up a fresh linen candle, Natalie considered getting it for her mother, but then set it back down. The price was ridiculous. Twenty dollars for a candle? Absolutely not. If anything her mother would wonder why Natalie would splurge on a gift like that in the middle of the year. Her family wasn't poor, but they weren't rich either. Both of her parents worked and they put a lot of money into Natalie and her brother. Add in your everyday expenses and they didn't have a ton of money left to spend for fun. She didn't mind it, though. She loved thrift shopping and finding deals and bargains.
Okay, stop getting distracted. Body spray. She finally made her way to the shelf full of yummy scents. She picked up a bottle of sweet pea and smiled before she started heading to the register before she noticed a familiar girl. Natalie didn't know her name, but she knew she had seen her around before. Where had she seen her? Natalie stared at the girl until she remembered that the girl went to her school. She had just been yelled at by some girl she had barely known in a chat window, and she was beginning to feel the comedy of the entire thing all too well. Laughing at herself again and shaking her head, the redhead popped into another store to escape from the wrath of the girl named Destiny if she should decide to hunt her down and find her for another one-sided argument. At least Arizona had helped her blow off steam, or at least she hoped she had. If the girl had been yelling at her and got no satisfaction out of it, it was a waste of breath and words. She was beginning to feel a bit of gratitude inside her for not having to deal with listening to people yell. You could only sign so passionately, but it never hurt like yelling seemed to hurt people. When she next peeked her head out of the small clothing store, it seemed that the coast was definitely clear. Slightly relieved, Arizona snuck out and made her way casually through the crowds in silence. A few boys who probably went to her new school nodded at her as she walked past, but she ignored them, choosing not to let them think she was interested. Even if she was, it was pointless. She would be wholly unable to communicate anything to the meatheads in their white wife-beaters and basketball shorts. Once more Arizona shook her head, trying to wrap her brain around the amusing people she kept meeting. Her confidence had grown considerably since she had met a few kindly people online who offered to help, and even some who knew sign language. This town was shaping up to be a lot brighter than she had expected, and more than she had hoped. Arizona meandered aimlessly for a while, but finally noticed a shop that would be able to provide something for her. Bath and Body Works, the store of smells instead of sounds, and colors instead of music. Approving, she walked into the store with a slight bounce in her step. As Arizona smelled a few lotions, she was unaware that a worker behind her attempted to make communication. Of course, the lady gave up quickly and went off to restock some shelves without Arizona ever noticing her. As she perused the collection, enjoying every scented candle, lotion, and bath bubble, she noticed a girl looking at her in a rather odd fashion. She recognized the girl, probably from one of her trips around town, or maybe from one of the sports games she had attended recently? Arizona supposed that the girl must go to Manchester Prep, for she looked to be about that age. Maybe she had seen her at registration? Smiling, Arizona offered a nod greeting to the girl, unsure of what to do. She couldn't say hello, and felt a bit awkward trying. So instead she stood in place, waiting for something to happen. Why would she do that? She decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she had earbuds in and Natalie couldn't see them. When the girl looked over at her, she felt caught in the act. What was she supposed to do now?
Socializing was not her thing. In fact, she avoided it if she could. It'd been that way for all of her life. She had never considered that she might have an actual problem until she read Girl, Interrupted her freshman year. The book exposed her to mental disorders, including anxiety. So Natalie researched it a bit more and found that she expressed symptoms of social anxiety. After reading them she had no idea what to do. Should she get help? Well, it wasn't interfering with her daily life. It didn't prevent her from leaving the house. And besides, what could medication do that her faith in God couldn't? If she was able to get up and go to school every day, why did she need to see a doctor? Other people needed doctors much more than her. Her problems weren't big enough.
Natalie let her mind slip back into Bath and Body Works. The girl offered her a smile, which Nat returned. Without thinking, she blurted out, "Hi!..." Please, please, please let this girl be nice, she silently prayed. If she couldn't help herself in this situation, God could. If she put her faith in Him, then how bad could this situation turn out? She continued to blurt out random stuff. "Uhm, that woman... the clerk. She was trying to get your attention. Ah, I guess you didn't hear her? But she was." Natalie shrugged. Her filter didn't really work when she found herself in these situations and instead she tended to ramble. [/style] TAG LIL/ARIZONA; OUTFIT HERE; NOTES aw thanks ur cute <3; ♔ [/style]

She tried her best to follow what the girl said, but it was pointless. She'd never learned lip-reading, and even if she had, she was a bit too far away to judge what was actually being said. She could feel her heart sink into her stomach, and she sighed lightly. People had never been her strong suit. They were generally very encased in self-conscious thoughts and worries, and when they did open up, it was to someone relatable. Not a poor deaf girl that could only smile and attempt to be friendly without words. Now, there were a few that Arizona had met who had tried their best. They had fought to learn sign language and make it less awkward, but it never really worked. They connected, and she missed them, but something was always vacant in their expressions. She tried to be patient, but she was slowly giving up hope. Here, it seemed there were no deaf students. Here she was left in silence, alone, without a soul to follow her. There were people she was starting to meet, though, that were different. They seemed different. Seemed to care about her as if she was a person of value, not an empty shell that should be avoided. Deaf was not a catching sickness. No, it was something much more than that. It was a chance to see the world in a new light. And now, this new girl here, seemed as if the twinkle in her eye and smile at the corner of her lips might mean something more than vacant, half-hearted attempts at friendliness. Of course, Arizona only knew one way to test the theory. Make friends or die trying, that's what she kept telling herself. So summoning up as much courage as her big heart could, she signed her usual go-to at times like this. I DEAF. SORRY.[/style][STYLE=width: 436px; background-color: #d66553; margin-top: 3px; font-family: Cordia New; font-size: 8px; text-transform: uppercase; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 3px; color: #ffffff] for NAT - 327 words - poor, awkward ari.[/style][STYLE=width: 436px; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 3px; font-family: Cordia New; font-size: 6px; text-transform: uppercase; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 3px; color: #000000]MADE BY KEROHOLIC BASED ON CRAYOLA'S TUT OF BTN! She had absolutely no idea what she was saying--or signing, rather. Natalie knowledge of American Sign Language was limited to religious signs. Sometimes at church they would have interpreted services. She loved watching the interpreter as the priest gave the sermon. Of course Natalie didn't understand what the interpreter was signing--that's when she checked back into the priest--but sign language was so beautiful that it captured her attention and held it. But she couldn't sign "God is great" to this girl, she'd think Natalie was some crazy Bible thumper and avoid her like the plague.
Maybe she could read lips? Natalie knew the distance wouldn't help with that, so she approached the girl. What if she said the wrong thing? She knew absolutely nothing about Deaf culture. The last thing she wanted to do was offend the poor girl. And now it wasn't like she couldn't say anything at all. For one thing, it would have been incredibly rude of her. For another, Natalie knew Jesus would have never not talked to the girl because communication would have been difficult. Jesus: that's who she strived to be like. He was her Savior and her role model. Of course, she would never be like Jesus. Jesus was perfect, God in human flesh, and Natalie would never be perfect. But that's what Christianity was, being as accepting and loving as Jesus Christ was. What would Jesus do? Talk to her.
"Okay, ah... well, I don't sign," she replied, putting her acting training to use and enunciating, "But... hi. I'm Natalie." It was a really lame reply, but it was something. She literally had absolutely no idea what to say to this girl, so she rambled as usual. "Sometimes, at church, we have interpreted services. It's really pretty--the sign language, I mean. The sermon, too, I guess. But when mass is interpreted I always watch it. ASL's a beautiful language." Please, God, let her be able to understand me. She tried to catch any words she could, but it was no use. She saw an o and a lot of what were either ms or ns or both. The rest of the letters were too similar for her to pick out. She tried her best, though, but couldn't understand anything. Luckily, she'd been in situations like this before. The first time she'd ever been faced with someone who couldn't sign was when she was very little. They had given her sticky notes and a pencil for her thoughts, and even without proper spelling education or enough knowledge of the English language from Abigail, she had been able to communicate. Some of those simple conversations she had saved in a little booklet throughout the years, remembering the moments in her life where nothing could keep two people from befriending one another. Today, technology was even far greater advanced than paper and pens. She was most comfortable with the computer, since she used it for a lot of communication now between herself and her siblings. Obviously, there were no open computers here in the Bath and Body Works, so she had to use the next-best thing. The portable computer in her pocket, known as her cell phone. The invention of text was revolutionary in her mind, and made awkward situations a little easier. Removing the phone from her pocket, she held up a finger to say one second and began to type, using proper grammar to make things even less confusing. Of course, she needed to know what to say. Introducing herself might be the easiest way to go about. With a smile, she finished her statement and offered the phone to the girl before her. It read: Hello, my name is Arizona. Why hadn't Natalie thought to put out her cell phone? "Oh duh!" she said, "Good idea! Much better than trying to speak..." She trailed off, realizing that she was rambling to a girl that couldn't hear it. She pulled out her cell phone and typed: Hi, I'm Natalie. Arizona's such a pretty name!
It was a little strange to Natalie that Arizona couldn't read lips. Wasn't that taught to deaf students in school? At least, if they went to a deaf school. Natalie had always just assumed that deaf people just kind of picked up lip reading as they grew up. She didn't want to ask though. She was always so afraid of offending people.
But she had to get points for trying, right? Natalie couldn't help but wonder how many people actually tried to make an effort with Arizona. The people in this town could be so stuck-up. They were cliquey and catty. She didn't understand it. What was the point of being mean and nasty when one of these kids might be your doctor one day? Or your lawyer? They'd be making your computers or fighting for your freedom. All the hate that surrounded the school was so pointless, and the queen of it all, Desiree Sinclair, was ridiculous herself. If Natalie wouldn't have anxiety attack breathing the same air as her, she would totally stand up to the older girl. The hierarchy was stupid and there was no point to it because people were friends with each other anyway.
She typed some more: I was just going on about how we sometimes have interpreted services at church. They're really pretty to watch. I watch them more than the priest sometimes! Natalie was about to ask Arizona if she went to church, but then realized that could be rude. She knew not everyone was a Christian and that folks would get really offended by Christianity--fast. If she had just possibly made a new friend, she didn't want to ruin it. [/style] TAG LIL/ARIZONA; OUTFIT HERE; NOTES churchy natalie; ♔ [/style]

One thing you could count on in a city like this was for everyone to have a phone. Most of the places that she had lived, she had always had friends without a cell phone, mp3 player, or any other device of the kind. Of course, this town was rich. It was something that made Arizona a little uncomfortable about living here; the air was thick with jealousy and hatred, and the people at her school were wealthy beyond reason. Of course they were. It was just like Arizona to end up somewhere that would test her and push her beyond her usual bounds of comfort. She was always being taken from her friends and family, from what she had always known, and it seemed oddly appropriate that it would be a greater difficulty here. Still, some people knew sign language. Some people really liked her, even if they had hardly known her. And to her, that was just enough. Her heart was strong, even through the trials. People already hated her, it was true. That was life. And yet she couldn't've cared less. Arizona was all about new experiences, and her optimistic outlook on life was born from a feeling that people were people, no matter what. Looks, wealth, likes and dislikes, none of that mattered. Nobody was ever the same, and so she saw no reason to judge because of differences. The logic behind it made no sense. She looked down at the text the girl was showing her, and smiled. Her parents were atheists, but some of Arizona's ideologies were very Buddhist. Namely, she believed that all had a journey, and somehow, all people were connected. It seemed a more basic feeling that connected humanity than anything, though. But Arizona had never really dealt much with religion before, and even if she was atheist because of her parents, she had no real thoughts concerning the matter. Arizona typed her response. Thank you! I love sign language, because it is so fun to sign. You have to use lots of expressions, otherwise it's all wrong.[/style][STYLE=width: 436px; background-color: #d66553; margin-top: 3px; font-family: Cordia New; font-size: 8px; text-transform: uppercase; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 3px; color: #ffffff] for NAT - 358 words - :D[/style][STYLE=width: 436px; background-color: #ffffff; margin-top: 3px; font-family: Cordia New; font-size: 6px; text-transform: uppercase; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 3px; color: #000000]MADE BY KEROHOLIC BASED ON CRAYOLA'S TUT OF BTN! Natalie smiled. If there was one thing that she was good at, it was facial expressions. Everyone's first lesson in acting and theatre is pantomime. With pantomime, you don't speak or use props, sets, or costumes. It's just you, your face, and one chair per member of the pantomime. If your facials aren't good, your pantomime will fail. It was almost like sign language was pantomime. Arizona said that if you didn't use expression in sign language it would be "all wrong." People wouldn't understand it. It was the exact same way with pantomime. If you don't use facials, your scene wouldn't make sense. No one would have any idea what you're doing. Sure, it could be something obvious like fishing. People would get it when you threw out the line. But if you sit there waiting and then reel in the fish with a blank expression on your face, it looks wrong. No one reels in a fish so causally like that. They're either excited or really freaking out. Natalie guessed it was like that with sign language too. If you're meaning to be sarcastic but you don't show sarcastic facials, the words could come across as serious.
Thinking about it, Natalie thought she would love to learn sign language. As pretty as it was, it looked really hard, but it would be so cool if she could become trilingual. She already spoke Spanish--it was her first language. People were often surprised when she told them that because she was born and raised in America. But her parents had always spoke Spanish with each other at home, so when they had her older brother they raised him in a Spanish-speaking household. Same with Natalie, only she got lucky. Her brother was there to show her the tricks of English from an early age. He wasn't exposed to much English other than the television before starting school. She was always thankful to have her brother around. A lot of siblings bickered and argued, but the two Valdes children got along great. They were never an issue for their parents.
She typed back: That's so cool! You're going to Manchester Prep, right? What grade are you going into? Talking with technology was so much easier for her. [/style] TAG LIL/ARIZONA; OUTFIT HERE; NOTES (':; ♔ [/style]

It was lonely at home, without her siblings. She was often left to sit in silence at home now that her siblings were gone. Of course, her sister and family would be visiting this weekend. It would certainly be fun to see Abigail again, but her husband didn't sign more than a few basic things, which was somewhat awkward. In a family of hearing people, Arizona was often the odd-one-out. Of course, she didn't mind. She loved her sister, and her brother-in-law, and nothing would come between her and the ones she loved. Not even a language barrier. She thought about Natalie. The girl was religious, and she seemed very sweet. The expressions on her face were the key to her gentle nature. A little bit shy, too, though Arizona assumed it was because of the level of awkwardness in talking to someone who was both knew and deaf. A lot of people that Arizona met were like that at first. They eased up, if they ever continued the conversation, and always continued to talk to her afterward. It was something that she could look forward to, at least. Being able to converse with anyone regardless. Not able to nor having the heart to discriminate based on age, gender, ethnicity, or even simply appearance. Arizona was treated more like an outcast than more of the children who labeled themselves as such, which seemed ridiculous. She didn't bite, and if you were willing to try, she'd go out of her way to be the best friend she could for you. I am going to be a Sophomore, though I am already sixteen. I am going to Manchester Prep, but I am a little nervous. Sometimes people do not appreciate me in their classes.People, especially nervous High School students, were the quickest to judge and the worst when it came to forming opinions. Deaf people were loved by some, and treated like a cancer by others. A lack of hearing wasn't contagious, and it wasn't a disease, but that did not matter. What people saw and felt was just enough. Arizona always tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it was hard, especially when she could feel the brunt of their sting.
