life
It was safe to say that life for a young Wesley was fairly normal. He had been raised by two loving parents who could be a bit on the overprotective side, but because they often had tight schedules between working, taking care of the house, and making sure he stayed safe, he could never attend as many social gatherings as he wanted. While he was considerably friendly, he was on the quieter side and had a tendency to withdraw from large crowds. He was never overly talkative and had limited social skills because he had little experience with dealing with more than a handful of people at the same time.
This came hand-in-hand with a fear of being in front of large crowds. In other words, he had stage fear that was not easy to conquer, but that never stopped him from quietly admiring the people who had the bravery to stand in front of others and take both criticism and praise. When it came to the performing arts, he liked to do the behind-the-scenes things such as creating backgrounds and setting up scenery for aspiring actors and actresses. His increasing experience with creating sets led him to discover that while he could never sing or dance, he was quite talented with art. At first he stuck to basic landscapes, but he gradually explored his horizons and took classes in order to fully learn the concepts of realism, perception, and proportion. He also found himself dabbling a bit in abstract art because while realism was undeniably impressive, there was something pleasant about how abstract art could contain layers and layers of meaningfulness and feeling.
As he grew increasingly talented with his artwork, he received a considerable amount of praise from encouraging parents, proud teachers, and kind classmates. He thought that maybe someday he would open his own gallery or sell his art, but the notion of presenting his works and talking about them often shook him up. What if people hated his art? What if they mocked and jeered at him? So he continued to work behind-the-scenes on the stage of his school and for a local theatre group, and that was how he attracted the attention of an aspiring starlet. She was the girl who was a shoo-in for lead roles, and she couldn’t help but to notice that her once shabby surroundings became progressively more beautiful. Her attention was directed to the boy who was always working hard offstage, and it didn’t take him long to notice that she was constantly looking at him. Unsure of how to react, he’d often return her curious gazes with shy, bashful looks, feeling certain that he must have been delusional. How could a girl like her possibly be interested in a wallflower like him? But the day she confronted him and made small talk; sparks flew and they immediately hit it off.
Before long, they knew each other’s life stories and the dreams they strove for. She admired his passion for art and wished she could help him overcome his fear of public speaking, and he loved seeing her practice parts, slowly committing lines to memory. She would often ask him to play opposite roles, and when they shared a close privacy, it was easy to act just for her. Unfortunately he would never be able to perform alongside her because of his ever present stage fright. How could he possibly imagine being on a stage when he could hardly speak in front of a small class for presentations? He didn’t want to disappoint her, but her encouragements simply weren’t enough for him to face his fear.
As part of this tale, he eventually had to overcome the fear that was holding him back from his full potential. His constant willingness to play opposite roles to help her practice and being around during play practice so often allowed him to commit every role and detail to memory. He likely could have successfully played a part had he had the nerve to stand onstage. As fate would have it, on opening night things had been going perfectly. However a short intermission before the big love scene of the play turned out to be unwise. The lead male protagonist met an unfortunate accident when he slipped on the way back from a bathroom break and sprained his ankle. Meanwhile the runner-up was nowhere to be found, and before panic was unleashed, a voice spoke up claiming that Wes could help. He froze up and tried to sneak away, but she took his hand and calmly stated that he knew what to do. Before he could protest, he was whisked away and dressed up for the part.
Suddenly he was on stage with the lights shining into his eyes, blinding him. Hundreds of pairs of eyes were focused on him, and everything he ever knew vanished from his mind. He could feel his throat tighten from nerves, and his vision started to blur like he might just faint. Prepared to quit and make a fool of himself, he felt a hand squeeze his and looked over. The girl smiled encouragingly and mouthed that he could do it because she had faith in him. Focusing on her, he started to mumble the lines that formed in his mind. As he continued to speak, it grew easier and easier to talk onstage. He wondered what he had been so afraid of, and by the time he was able to switch out because the runner-up had been found, he felt at ease.
He received praise that while he was shaky at first, it was a job well done. He was satisfied that he had gotten over his stage fear even if it wasn’t in the most conventional or practical of ways. It was risky have had to confront his fears in that sort of scenario but luckily worked, and he was grateful. Being able to face his fear gave him to courage to finally ask out the girl, and she gladly accepted. They had been going strong until the first year of college, where differing interests and a long distance relationship simply didn’t work out. They break up on friendly terms and parted ways to walk respective paths to their dreams.
Once in college, he pursued an art major but wasn’t sure what exactly he wanted. He was somehow led to the path of teaching, and he found that he didn’t quite mind sharing his knowledge with people who were interested. Plus, now that he was comfortable with public speaking, he wouldn’t feel uncomfortably standing in front of teenagers in need of education. As he went along with the flow, he landed himself a job as an art teacher at Manchester Preparatory Academy. Once there, he noticed that many students shared the same stage fright he had once been plagued with, so besides trying to help students with art, he also runs a small club after school to help the shy and quite develop better public speaking skills.
