life
The beginning of Tavish’s life was typical in his eyes, born to a couple who married far too young and fast and simply over the fact that they’d had a son together. Both violent alcoholics, birth to age five were a bit hectic and loud and rough. They often left him on his own for several hours at a time while they overindulged in their drink of choice. Throughout his first five years of his life several calls to children’s aid were made but nothing was ever done about the neglectful parents. It was the year he turned five when that changed. His father was cheating. His mother was cheating. They drank until they passed out and left Tavish alone in an area that had construction being done behind it. Left alone with nothing to do he decided to explore the construction area as kids often do he ventured around the dangerous area and ended up knocking boards over, which knocked metal beams over, which fell on him and knocked him unconscious. Several of the beams fell on his left leg. Tavish was left there for several hours before curious neighbor children came to explore as he did, running to get his parents. Months later out of the hospital he was now in foster care.
Not all of his foster homes were bad. Not all of his foster parents were the typical abusive type. On the contrary, they were mostly lovely. It was Tavish who was the nasty one, refusing to comply to rules and unwilling to trust anyone. At such a young age he didn’t understand why he wasn’t allowed to live with his parents. He was a smart kid, but confused and angry and despite the great promise he showed he was unruly and unmotivated. He ran away often. He fought with the other kids in the home. He never stayed long before his foster parents ruled him too much to handle. And if it wasn’t because Tavish was just a brat it was because they couldn’t afford to take care of him, especially since he was deemed “special needs” with the prosthetic leg. The few abusive homes he did go to he always fought back and was never there for very long before being moved somewhere else again. And then he finally met his match with a woman named Helen Perry, who was well experienced in angry kids like him and refused to just give up. After a year of working at getting Tavish to trust her they finally built an understanding. A year later she was asking how he’d feel about moving to Manchester, Maryland and how he’d feel about her adopting him. This is his second year in Maryland, coming from New Orleans, and first six months of being adopted.
