HERE'S A NIGHT, AND IT SHINES
It was Saturday night, and Jax could already tell by the way the moon hung in the sky that it was going to be an extraordinary one.
It was nearing one in the morning already, but Jax wasn't tired; fatigue never struck him at this hour. To Jax, the night was still very much young; he was a relentless night owl, always staying up until at least four A.M., taking advantage of the muse the dark hours usually gave him by writing furiously. If he was in a particularly uninspired mood, sometimes he would decide to pursue a spontaneous late-night adventure, just for the hell of it. Why not? He was young and stupid, and when he was old and boring he would have a boring job that would start at some ungodly hour in the morning, and he'd probably go to sleep ridiculously early, at nine or something, because his life would be too boring and tiring to stay up any later. Jax firmly believed that he should enjoy his freedom now before it was too late. It was the perfect excuse to spend the night being reckless, spontaneous, carefree. Jax had decided that tonight was destined to be one of those nights, and he had also already christened Sparrow to be his accomplice; she just wasn't aware of this small detail yet. She had played the role before, of course, countless times. There weren't many people in this town who would sacrifice a potential night of partying for a night of adventuring. Fortunately, Sparrow was one of those people, and Jax loved that about her. It was pretty convenient to have one of those kinds of people as your best friend. The boy had been texting her just before descending his porch steps, but he hadn't warned her of his impending arrival; they had been texting for awhile, she hadn't said she was busy, and he knew that she wouldn't mind his company. He just hoped that she didn't mind the surprise.
The window of Jaxton's beat-up Blazer was rolled all the way down, the music all the way up. The wind refused to let his dark hair stay put as he drove a little too fast to Sparrow's house. She didn't live far; it was certainly walkable, and Jax usually loved a good walk, especially at night. However, he had no idea what the evening's adventure would end up being, and what if they needed a car? A cigarette was nestled lazily between his fingertips; each smokey breath disappeared out the window the instant it escaped his lips. Jax absolutely loved driving, especially at night. This habit proved to be quite a curse in the long run, due to the high price of gas, his inevitably empty pockets, and his tendency to drive high. Well, actually, Jax was excellent at being high and driving. Driving drunk, however, had never been one of his better decisions.
He parked his car, hastily tossing his now finished cigarette into the empty street as he stepped out onto the concrete. The night air was cool on his skin; he wore a simple gray v-neck and dark jeans, typical Jaxton apparel, never over the top, simple as could be. He leaned against the side of his car, sliding his phone out of his pocket as his gaze turned upward toward the canvas of stars that made up the sky tonight. Lily crossed his mind in that moment, but he quickly shook the thought. He had numbed himself, taught himself how to forget quickly and easily. It was almost like Lily had never been alive. That scared him sometimes. His focus switched to Sparrow's bedroom window. He couldn't help but smirk a bit as he slid his phone out of his back pocket; he had never surprised her like this before, and it would be a lie to say that he wasn't sort of excited to see her reaction. He typed out a text message to Sparrow: If you could do anything in the entire world right now, what would it be? Also, you should come outside. The stars are too pretty to be looking at them alone.
He put his phone back in his pocket and waited, resisting the urge to light up another cigarette. He smoked too much. He didn't smoke enough. He could never decide which one it was.
