here i am, a rabbit hearted girl, frozen in the light,
Well, that had gone a lot differently than she had thought it would. It was kind of one of those things she had never expected would happen, and it wasn't that she really regretted it or anything, it was just that she was having a difficult time believing it had actually happened. Of course she knew it had, she knew realistically that that date had happened, and everything was great and wonderful and absolutely surreal and confusing at the exact same time. She felt like she was back in high school again, which nearing thirty, was not exactly a pleasant feeling. She'd been trying not to think about it, to happily go on with life and not think about the fact that she'd kissed her best friend and it had been completely different than it had been seven years ago. There was no ultimatum, no threat of goodbyes, nothing. And things had just sort of happened. Molly had never particularly been gushy about boys, even when she was in high school. If she liked a boy, she dated him. That was just sort of how her life had gone up until this point, when everything hit the fan and any semblance of normalcy that she had tricked herself into believing flew out the window. So she did what she normally did in times like this, she went and found Der. She'd done it after Corbin came to town and she did it now that everything flipped upside down.
They'd gone off to the boardwalk because hanging out at home was boring, honestly. Not that Molly thought hanging out with him was boring - Dmitri was there, how could it be? - but she wanted to be moving. If she was mobile maybe she wouldn't think about it, even though that was the whole reason she'd gone and sought out her friend. She needed counsel. Maybe years ago she would have asked Anna, but that was obviously not an option anymore, and the next option would be Corbin. Definitely not an option. So Der would have to suffice, and she was sure he'd be absolutely thrilled about it. The point was just getting the nerve to actually talk to him. She wouldn't honestly be surprised if Cor ran over there and spilled his guts or anything, since Der seemed to know all those deep dark secrets that no one ever wanted to tell her about. Oh well. So she met up with him and was currently looking out over the water, smelling the salt and the food from the little kiosks and shops on the boardwalk. There were boats bobbing in the water and the sound of the shore hitting the dock, which was, under any other circumstance, generally a relaxing sound. But right now she was too busy wondering what exactly Der knew. She turned to her friend and skimmed the small food places for a moment until she found one. "Hey, elephant ears, wanna get some?" She pointed to the elephant ear cart, which was seasonal with the little carnival that hit the boardwalk this time of year. Elephant ears were good, the rolled out dough and cinnamon, which suddenly sounded really good.
Without waiting for him to respond, she trotted over to the little cart and got in the line, which was fairly short and quick-paced. When she reached the server she ordered and paid for an elephant ear, and waited the short moment for it to be finished. When the worker handed the fair food over, she thanked them and crinkled the wax paper around it. "Dude these things are amazing," She said, waving the elephant ear toward her friend. Molly paused for a moment, tried not to be scatterbrained, and ended up bouncing on the balls of her feet. She'd never been exceptional at keeping things bottled in, at least things like this. If something bothered her, it just sort of spilled out - she was never an underemotional person, and she wore those sorts of things on her sleeves most of the time. This, even though she tried to hide it, really wasn't much of an exception. She pursed her lips and looked at her friend, her brown eyes wide. "Sooooo. How have you beeeen?" She asked Der, pulling off a piece of the elephant ear and chewing on it thoughtfully. So far, an afternoon out was going disastrously, and it was pretty much exclusively her own undoing. Molly shifted the strap of her tote on her shoulder and curled her toes in her flip flops so they slapped loudly against her heels. "Anything new going on?" Corbin had actually mentioned something, although she wasn't going to press it if Der didn't want to talk about it. Besides, as long as he could keep her out of her mind for a little while, she didn't care what they talked about.
