life
march twenty second, nineteen ninety four
Tabitha's mother always described the day of her only daughter's birth as the best day of her life. She and her husband had been trying to have a child for quite some time and after various miscarriages, they had been ready to throw in the towel. The pain of losing baby after baby was too much for the married couple. When Hannah Reed found herself pregnant once again she couldn't stop herself from hoping that maybe this one would be different. She was right and although the pregnancy was a little rocky at times, Tabitha was born happy and healthy. Tabitha became her parents' little miracle from that day on.
September second, nineteen ninety nine
When Tabitha was five years old, she began school with more than a little enthusiasm. Her parents were very protective and decided it would be best to enroll her into the nearby Christian private school. They were a very religious family and they brought their young daughter to church at least once a week. As a young child, Tabby was rather loud and outgoing which didn't really fit in with the more reserved environment of her school. It took a few years but she eventually did calm down and seemed like she would become a lovely lady some day.
May seventh, two thousand and five
The Reed family was a happy unit. They did everything that a good little family should do. They went to church every Sunday, walked to the park a few times a week and always participated in neighborhood activities. All of them were very happy with their lives until some bad news ruined everything. Tabitha can still remember the day when her parents sat her down at the dining room table. For a moment she was worried that she was in trouble but they quickly reassured her that she wasn't. Instead, they told her that her father was sick, very sick. He had been diagnosed with cancer but they were going to do their best to treat it. Tabitha had begun to cry but her father reassured her that he was going to be completely fine, the treatment would work.
December eleventh, two thousand and seven.
This is what Tabitha refers to as the worst day. Despite herself, she cannot forget a single detail. The beeping of the machines, the labored breathing, the sound of rain falling and the all encompassing silence. Her father's hand had seemed so cold and lifeless as he laid there. His eyes were closed and he could hardly speak. The moment he slipped away she felt something inside of her break. She sat there, stunned as her mother clutched his lifeless body and wept. Tabitha couldn't move, couldn't let go of his hand, his freezing cold hand. Later that night she had heard a low keening noise. It took her a few minutes to realize that the noise was coming from her. That night was the first time she had ever questioned the god that had taken her father away.
October fifteenth, two thousand and eight
She can still remember the day that they met. He was a senior at the other private school. A friend of hers had dragged her out to a party that her mother would have never allowed. She had lied to get out that night, not that she cared. Her moral standard had changed drastically in the year following her father's death. The party was loud and she wasn't used to drinking more than a few sips of wine. Her head was spinning and she felt shaky in her too high heels. His hand had been so warm when he reached out to steady her. It felt as though her skin was on fire under his touch. She had left that night with his kiss still tingling on her lips and a promise to meet again.
February fourteenth, two thousand and nine
Her hand shook slightly as she clutched the flute of sparkling champagne. His smile was clouding her mind and causing her heart to beat far too quickly. They had been seeing each other for the past three months by that point and he wanted to make it special. The hotel room was romantic and his words were so convincing. She wasn't supposed to be there, she was supposed to be at a friend's house. Her mother would have had a fit if she knew where her daughter was. Tabitha had always been told to wait, to save herself for marriage but she didn't care. He wanted her and it made her feel special. He was a senior in high school but he wanted her. The pain only lasted a little while but she couldn't help feeling slightly empty.
May twenty fourth, two thousand and nine.
It couldn't be true, there must be something wrong. Tabitha had heard of false testing before. It probably didn't happen five times in a row but stranger things had happened. It wasn't supposed to happen, they had always been careful. Her mother would be crushed. She was only fifteen, far too young to be a mother. Options swirled around in her head, abortion was out of the question, she just couldn't do that. Adoption was considered but something inside of her told her that she couldn't follow through. The thought of giving away her baby just seemed far too hard. She never did tell him, he was only a week away from graduation, he was going away to become a teacher. She told him that long distance wasn't for her, she needed her freedom.
January fourth, two thousand and ten
The pain was unbearable. Tabitha had never imagined that it would be that bad. Her hand clutched desperately at her mother's as a sweat beaded up on her forehead. It was only two months until her sixteenth birthday and she was about to become a mother. He seemed so impossibly small and yet his voice could shatter glass. His cries did not cease until he was placed in his young mother's arms. Tabitha named him Gavin Frederick Reed and quickly became very attached to her son. He was named after her father, Frederick Reed and she knew that he would have been just as in love with the little boy as she was.
now.
Tabitha decided to take a year off after the birth of her son. She had tried to do some home schooling but it proved to be too much at the time. She waited for the next year to complete her sophomore year which she decided to do at home. Her mother is a teacher and more than qualified to educate her daughter. She continued to do that for Tabitha's junior year until she had to get a paying job. The family of three needed more income so Tabitha had to enroll in an actual school. Not wanting the judgement of her previous school, she decided to attend Mancester instead. She is now about to start her senior year in her new school although she doesn't really know anyone. The principle and a few teachers know about her predicament and others who find out about her age just assume she was held back. Her fellow students do not know about her son...yet.
