life
the youngest child of three, charlotte was born on a nice, warm summer day in uptown maryland. born to the one of country’s most pushy and successful lawyers, joshua knight, and to one of the most hard-working doctors at the maryland hospital, christina gonzales-knight, charlotte hope knight had her fate pretty much set out for her – to follow in her parent’s footsteps. ever since she had been a child, charlotte had been aware of all the pressures that were already on her, as she watched her siblings excel in school, win scholarships and awards.
her childhood had not been bad, she had not been abused, nor uncared for. but sometimes, charlotte felt as if her parents had no time for her. with her mom working late shifts at the hospital, and her dad always taking on the hardest cases, sometimes even more than he could handle, her second place at the art fair-awards seemed to always be overshadowed by her older brother’s international science fair project or her sister’s debate team winning first place at nationals. but this lack in attention spurred something deep inside of charlotte, a want to be in the spotlight, a want to prove herself.
she had a good relationship with her siblings, they had cared for her, though the age difference of five years and eight years sometimes were an issue. they had such different minds than her – they were more logical and rational, and she was more a dreamer and illogical. was it wrong that she felt as if she came from the wrong family?
at age five, she begged her parents to sign her up for ballet and gymnastics classes at the country club. at age nine, she discovered hip hop dancing. dancing came naturally to her, her feet were always on the dancefloor. instead of focusing on her lack of time with her parents, she would spend all day at the dance studio, perfecting her moves and practicing for the next recital. hiphop was byfar her forte. with the music pulsing through her veins, she moved well with the music.
but yet, her parents disapproved of her dancing, though they never stopped her from doing it, they urged her to focus more on her academics, to become a doctor or a lawyer, just like her parents. thus, when charlotte entered high school, she forced herself to take honors and ap classes, and discovered her immense hatred for math and biology. not doing well in her classes, and constantly stressed, going on the dance floor was her only escape, as she was constantly hysterical.
charlotte never quite gave up on her dream of becoming a dancer, a world-famous one, as well as earning her parent’s respect and finding her own path.

he watched her carefully, his gaze almost analytical, like a scientist, studying the behavior of an animal or some sort. he felt a little silly comparing her to an animal, but he figured that he should understand how she was feeling, the little body language she was giving to him in exchange for the little verbal expression. he probably wouldn’t say anything about it, but alex noticed – he noticed the reluctance, the slight fear in her eyes as she reached out to take his hand. the pause, the vulnerability, the tension in the air that was undeniable. his breath caught, and he suddenly was in fear whether she would take her hand back, disregard his attempt to fix their seemingly broken (was it really broken?) friendship. it was symbolic, almost. would she take his hand so they could get through and patch whatever had gone wrong in their friendship? or would she pull back and leave him behind with only memories to spare?
alex breathed a sigh of relief the minute her hand took his, as he gently helped her up off her seat. her touch was brief, her hand leaving his immediately, and suddenly he got the feeling that she wasn’t very comfortable with physical contact with him – no matter how casual the contact had been. it was to be expected, he suddenly realized, she had kissed him and kissing was certainly a physical contact that could’ve alluded to just taking a hand. another glance at velouette told alex that she had somewhat recovered from whatever hesitation that had plagued her earlier. a half-smile was in place of that somewhat fearful look in her eyes just merely moments ago. "where are we headed to?"
he looked around the spa, his vision focusing on the door ahead of him. turning back, he gave vel a smile. “i was thinking just a simple walk around the lake, nothing big,” alex said, leading the way to the door. one small push opened the glass door to a bright light and the deep blue of the lake outside. it was such a beautiful day that a lot of the hogwarts students were spending the day outside and socializing with their friends along the shore, but frankly, none of that made a difference on alex. he figured that a nice stroll in the fresh air would clear both their minds and maybe actually get some talking done.
suddenly, as they stepped out of the spa and onto the pathway that circled around the very large lake, he felt like a little eleven-year-old boy again, trying to figure out how to talk to a girl, yet getting over the idea that girls had cooties. he stuffed his hands in his pockets, clearing his throat as to trying to figure out how to bring out the subject in the most efficient way possible. normally, he wouldn’t have trouble finding words or approaching a situation, but how could you ask your best friend why she kissed you without it being awkward? then it hit him that there was no way the subject could not be awkward.
“why did you do it?” he finally asked, his voice strained. “why did you kiss me?”
