camden playfully drummed on the soft off white cloth of the table, a melodic tune coming at the whims of his fingertips. he glanced down at his watch: a quarter to two. he was early, a bit unintentional but he couldn't help it. he could barely keep himself still. he was filled with excitement and was going to burst if he didn't tell someone soon. he had to admit, lunch with velouette was always refreshing, especially since he knew her quite well. they were in the same social class sure but they connected more then most of the superficial friendships that were forged here in manchester. he was a basketball player, she was a cheerleader and they both had wealth amongst their families - all the cliches you could possibly have. if you knew the two you would assume they were dating, but camden could never bring him to consider asking her out.
he pulled the sleeves up of his button up and undid his top button, allowing himself the chance to breathe much better then he had been. he was nervous for her arrival to say the least. he had grown accustom to being nervous around velouette but he didn't exactly know why. i mean, she was only a mere sixteen years old, camden eighteen. while they only had two years between them, it would be weird if something would have happened between the two. regardless the chemistry was there - there was no doubt about it. camden looked up and searched the vicinity of of the bar and grill, his soft green eyes carefully watching the patrons converse and eat the food that was set in front of them. he smiled a bit once he made eye contact with a shorter blond waitress, his hand motioning her to come over. "Hey, im waiting for me friend to arrive," he began, his eyes shifting from her to the menu. "But can I have a glass of water with lemon?" he inquired with a sharp smile as the waitress nodded her head and flashed him a flirtatious smile. Camden smiled at her and couldn't help but hold eye contact for a while. The waitress was cute, could not have been more then twenty two and had a bubbly personality. Camden imagined he must have looked older then he really was, only being a mere 18 years of age, but it didn't seem to bother the waitress. He smiled once more, muttering a simple, "Thank you." before casting his eyes back toward the menu.

camden tapped his foot excessively as he waited for his companion to join him. he had come fairly early, mostly to avoid being sucked in to doing household chores or going over business plans that his father had insisted they do on a regular basis. he wanted to devote his complete attention to velouette rather then having to risk bailing on her or seeming uninterested in conversation with her. he was fairly early, but it didn't mind him much, he preferred people watching whenever he could, a geniune smile being given to anyone who happened to look in his general direction. he was lost in thought, thinking about his platonic relationship with velouette and how he wished that it had grew to something bigger. it helped they were in the same social circle and that they both had a passion of athletics, but camden was never much of a party guy, rather insisting on spending his free time in the gym. his potential scholarship depended on it. his whole life he had dreamed of going to the university of maryland, although today he had recieved an offer he wasnt sure he could refuse. he got into ucla, a school well known for basketball but he wasnt sure he could ever leave manchester. he had friends here, and memories that he wasn't ready to give up on.
he let out a sigh of relief as he spotted velouette hurrying, only to stop at the entrance. explaining a few words to the hostess, he watched as she made his way to his table, a soft and reassuring smile as she took a seat. "oh hey slowpoke." he said with a smirk, his tone rather playful and sarcastic. she had made it roughly on time but it did not bother camden one bit. he was glad that she was here. one playful stare later and camden handed her a menu to look at. "it's honestly no problem, i haven't been here long. beside's i was waiting for this beautiful girl to join me. and here she is." he said with a smirk. camden was often a gentleman and a type of guy that you could bring to your parents. he was a product of being raised in a small town with a family that supported whatever he chose to do. camden smiled as he looked at his friend, admiring her true beauty. "you look amazing." he said, rewarding her effort with the truth. truth was, camden maybe had a crush on the girl, although he was never the type to act out his feelings. he placed his hand on the table and reached for the menu.
"im thinking steak." he said, his finger slowly rising to his lip as he tapped it in thought. camden hadnt actually paid much attention to the menu, although he noticed the subtle changes they had added. his eyes scanned the menu, checking for various sides and other entrees that he potentionally could get. mashed potatos? nahh, mac and cheese....? yes. i'll get that. he thought, a smile creeped on his face. "oh, by the way, it's my treat." he added, his voice half playful and the other more serious. "do you have practice later?" he inquired, his eyebrow raising slightly. he had basketball practice later that evening which meant that he needed to get in the mental zone before hand. he looked at her once more, chuckling to himself as he awaited her response.

he grinned once more as he eyed the room once more, a sense of relaxation in his eyes as he formulated his response to velouette. "no, just being honest." he said with a soft chuckle as he adored her once more. coming from a wealthy family, he knew that he could have simply been a sarcastic asshole who let the green get the best of him, but instead he knew a thing or two about work ethic, which he believed kept him grounded and appreciative of the people who had to work for everything. "so what caught your eye?" he inquired, the smile still bright on his face. he looked back down at the menu and bit down on his lip once more, a habit he tended to do when he was nervous. as much as he was completely at ease around velouette, something about her made him feel as if he was being attacked by butterflies.
when she spoke, camden watched as she offered to split the bill. "nonsense. my mom would kill me if I allowed you to split the bill, when i invited you out to lunch." he answered with a nod, holding his composure momentarily before breaking out in a laugh. although he was partly serious, he knew how their friendship worked, sometimes she paid for things and others it was he that paid. it wasn't necessarily about being a gentlemen, he figured he was, it was about respect and not wanting her to feel helpless, especially because she too came from a wealthy family. but still he would always offer to pay because he didn't want her to have too. it was the way he was raised. if his mom ever discovered that he allowed velouette to pay (only when she insisted), camden would surely put through the ringer. "fine." he began, his eyes looking at hers, "it's a date." camden once more brought the glass to his lips taking yet another sip of his water as he folded his naps neatly across the table. he listened to her speak, nodding in agreement as she talked about not letting the competition get ahead of her. she was right. every moment you waste doing nothing, someone is getting better, and you needed that mindset to have determination to get better. "oh yeah, trust me, i know what you mean." he replied. often camden went to practice an hour early to get shots up before the rest of his teammates arrived, likely the reason why he was being recruited over his teammates. "oh!" he exclaimed, his body shifting excitingly in his seat. "ucla offered me a scholarship!" he said, his grin stretching from ear to ear.
me neither. although cam likes her. haha. |
