life
mav is the oldest of three children. he has a younger sister, a junior in high school, and a younger brother who is a freshman. they weren't always the most functional family. you see when mav turned four his mom became an alcoholic. she could have been one before for all mav knew, but it didn't become apparent to him until he was about four. he spent most of his younger years looking after chase and emma, trying to make sure that they were protected. when mav's mother became an alcoholic his dad totally checked out of their lives, pretending like everything was how it was before. so mav became more of a dad than an older brother to his younger siblings.
it was in the third grade that mav met kota. she instantly became his best friend. they told their third grade secrets to one another and when he wasn't busy looking after his little brother and sister he spent as much time as he could at kota's house. the older he got the more pessimistic he got about happiness and relationships. kota would always talk about her fairytale ending and whatnot and mav, being a good friend, would listen but would know that it could never happen.
his freshman year of high school he really came into himself. he joined the baseball team and for the first time it seemed like more girls than just kota were paying attention to him and he couldn't deny how much he liked it. he of course had girlfriends a lot but for some reason none of them compared to the girl who had always been by his side. he knew that kota was just his friend though so he never went for it.
at the end of his sophomore year him and his younger siblings were moved into his aunt and uncle's house. it took a long time for him to get used to living in a home where the adults actually cared about the kids. his aunt and uncle were the total opposite to his parents. they had graciously taken in him and his two siblings even though they already had two kids of their own, his cousins patrick (a senior) and krystal (a freshman). he didn't have to go to kota's to escape from them, but that didn't stop him from spending all of his time there. whenever he finished baseball practice he would make his way over to her place until he had to be home for dinner.
he is fast approaching his senior year and he's pretty sure he already has a baseball scholarship to yale in the bag. besides kota all he had growing up was his athleticism and his brain and now those were going to pay off. the one thing that he can't figure out is what will happen with him and kota and every time he thinks about how he only has a year left with her it hurts.

Jaylee wasn’t so sure how she felt about the music that was filling her ear drums. It wasn’t like she wasn’t used to it by now. She heard it every time she was in this car or even just in Lucas’ room. It wasn’t like it was bad, she just associated with him so it was hard to genuinely like it. She tried to zone out a bit, not that the sharp turns were really helping. She let her eyes flutter close taking a few deep breaths. She wished her brain was functioning normally. It would make everything so much easier. She cursed herself for giving into stupid Lucas and going over to his house the previous night. She really needed to finish her AP English reading list before school started and had full intentions to work on it the night before, but that didn’t happen at all. She had even brought her stuff to Lucas’s, but without fail nothing got done. She really was going to have to buckle down on it soon if she wanted to keep her GPA up. Jaylee opened her eyes and looked over at his smug face. He thought he had Jaylee right where he wanted her, which was where he had every other girl, but Jaylee knew if she really wanted to she could be done with Lucas. The thing was that with all the stress of school having him to use to blow off steam wasn’t such a bad thing. Plus she set the limits and didn’t usually let him get too far. No way was she having sex with the known man whore. She didn’t want any STDs thank you very much. There were a few times where it almost got there, but Jaylee, quick to realize where it was going turned over, curled up in a ball, and went to sleep. Ok so that was a slight jerk move, but she wasn’t losing it to this guy. Not like she had really told anyone she still was an owner of a v-card, although she figured Lucas had concluded that. She still wasn’t losing it to him and that was that.
She tried not to jump a little with surprise as he touched her knee. Tender touching didn’t usually happen between the two of them so feeling him place his hand on her knee, even for the split second it was, was surprising to her. Jaylee was glad to hear that she wasn’t the only tired one in this situation. She couldn’t help but snicker a little as he grazed the curb. That’s what he got for thinking he was like one of the drivers on The Fast and the Furious. ‘Watch out for those curbs. They jump out at you.’ A small, devious smile graced her face at this. Insulting Lucas, that’s what she knew how to do best. Not this let’s be civil and act like we care about one another stuff. To her it was awkward and weird. With any other guy that’s what she would want, but with Lucas that was not the case at all. Jaylee couldn’t tell if his comment was him trying to make an effort of saying he enjoyed spending time with her or if he was just making a douchey comment per usual. Jaylee decided that it was probably the later knowing Lucas. ‘Of course you did. I mean you were with me.’ So Jaylee could be just as full of herself when she wanted to be. ‘No I won’t be mad because that isn’t happening. And when you lose I know it won’t be because you let me win because that’s not how you are.’ Jaylee grinned at this because she knew she was right and she couldn’t wait to beat him.
Jaylee saw the country club in the distance and couldn’t wait to get out of the crazy ride that was Lucas’s car. First thing on her mind was she was getting herself a raspberry lemonade before any tennis went down. She was a little addicted to them and probably drank at least three every time she had visited the country club this summer, which had been a lot. Plus there was that cute guy who worked there who she always couldn’t help but flirt with. She figured the guy was a local since she only ever saw him at the country club. It didn’t matter though because the cute guy was never going to be but eye candy for when she went to the country club to get her homework done.
