life
The product of an affair gone wrong, it was only natural that Dalton would be his mother's object of scorn. She had been playing the part of a mistress to a married man whom she believed would leave his wife for her, and she soon discovered she was half right when he left his wife and kids with a pile of debt and divorce papers, but he most certainly did not go to her. He dropped by for an occasionally visit, but his visits grew more scarce until they stopped altogether. A few months later, news came that little Dalton was an existing being that relied on her for survival.
As a fairly adorable child, Dalton was always showered by the attention of everyone, including the woman who mattered the most. However, he wished otherwise because having her eyes set on him did not result in anything good. His mother would often bully him about minor mistakes and pick at his flaws, questioning why he existed when he was next to useless. While he was young and naive, working harder to please her didn't seem to matter so much, but it seemed that the more he tried, the angrier she got.
Beyond that knowledge is a puzzle that is extremely easy to piece together in order to fully understand how he came to be the young man he is today.
Years flew by, Dalton grew up, and his patience with his mother frazzled into nonexistence. She was constantly on his case, and aging brought along the realisation that she would never love him. He was a simple reminder that her love life had gone awry, and he wasn't about to deal with her unjustified anger. Tired of seeing his efforts go to waste, he steadily dropped into a pleasant state of laziness, providing his mother with material to attack him with. He naturally grew pessimistic and cynical due to the poor way he was treated, and it didn't take much to push him to a point where he would readily retort.
Life at home was hostile and heavy, so he sought company from his peers. However, experience taught him that others generally take well to his snappy and overbearing nature, but minor exposure to the limelight had him addicted to attention and being liked. The simple solution was just for him to smile pretty and act in a way that got him accepted, and it wasn't long before he played the role of a people pleaser.
It was a matter of observing what type of characteristics were sought after and then slipping on a mask to make himself seem like the ideal type of guy. First impressions meant everything, and once he got past that obstacle, he was generally accepted and well liked. He discovered that life was much more enjoyable when he was surrounded by people, and he got into a habit of lying and deceiving people in order to be well liked. School seemed incredibly dull when he could be out and having a good time instead of being held captive inside a stuffy classroom.
In regards to his love life, he had inherited womanizing ways from a father he never knew. His mother's discovery of this had her in a rage, and he was soon booted out of the house because she refused to raise a kid who resembled her ex-lover more than her. At age sixteen, roaming around free was not an option though he didn't quite mind being on his own. For months he would wander from friends' houses with spotty attendance at school, but that came to an end when his uncle, the older brother of his uncaring mother, showed up and took him to Maryland, giving him a new home with a far more loving family.
Once he was enrolled in his new school, he was forced to repeat a year because his drama at home left his attendance and grades in a wreck. Again he slipped into a bad habit of playing nice in order to make friends, and he was predictably dubbed a drifter due to his social ways.
