life
When Gwen’s parents got divorced, no one was really surprised. They had been high school sweethearts who got married—and pregnant—too young. While they had been hopeful about their future (both work desk jobs at small companies with little room to grow), by the time Samson was born the walls were closing in. They fought all the time, with little Gwen in the middle desperate to keep the peace. She hated every minute of the screaming and crying—it turned her into a very shy, nervous little girl. As soon as she was old enough to read, Gwen turned to books and learning to block out the harsh realities of the real world.
Still, school was not a safe haven for Gwen. The girl who preferred reading to hopscotch on the playground was not well liked, and often teased. As she got older, the bullying got worse and worse until finally Gwen’s mother Maryann couldn’t stand to see her little girl come home crying any more. Right before eight grade she transferred Gwen to Manchester, with a scholarship based on her amazing academics. It was the right place for her anyways, where she could really learn and grow. Not wanting to be bullied again at her new school, Gwen let herself blend into the background, barely talking to other students or interacting outside of the classroom. So, the brilliant girl with the nervous stutter became a wallflower, and even though she’s been very lonely since, Gwen figures it’s for the best.
