life
The Sterlings were politicians, everyone knew that. For as long as they had been in Portland, Oregon, The Sterlings had been on it, and they’d had powers—and they’d been in some sort of office. It wasn’t long before Theodore, fresh out of college, found Rosemary. She was perfect; she was the empathy to his apathy, the warmth to his cool demeanor. And better yet, they were madly in love. As soon as they were married, the young couple became a political powerhouse; they attended every event open to them, spoke out anywhere they were welcome. It wasn’t really necessary, seeing as everyone was expecting Mr. Sterling to run for office anyways. And what do you know; by the time Vince was ten, his father was the Mayor of Portland.
Not that Vince ever paid much attention to politics. He might be the first offspring in the history of the Sterling Clan to show literally no interest in political agenda. At first, this really bothered his father, but Rosemary stepped in and being the gentle soul she always is, she reminded Theodore that everyone had their own interests, and that their son would be who he was no matter what. She was the type of woman who liked to believe that all children go through wild streaks, and that they had to be given room to be individuals. Their household was very traditional in that Theodore left his wife to do the childrearing, so Vince’s behavior hasn’t been a problem as of yet. His two younger siblings, Rosemary and Robert, are more well rounded than their older brother. He tries to be a little more controlled around them, because he doesn’t want them to put themselves at risk the way he does. While he and his mother have an understanding that he can take care of himself, his younger siblings aren’t made of as strong of stock. Occasionally Rosemary worries about her oldest, waiting patiently for him to grow out of his carelessness, but she doesn’t badger him about it.
You would think that Mr. Sterling, who liked everything to be perfect and cared very much about public opinion, would be irritated by his son’s antics. However, Vince has stayed out of the spotlight and kept himself from getting caught enough to keep his father from really worrying about it. From a young age, Vince had always shown a passion for the extreme. He was the sort of tyke to jump off the jungle gym at the park, just for the thrill of it. He was also the type to make friends fast, because he was always showing off his dare-devil behavior. But it wasn’t until he got to be a little older that Vince’s behavior turned into anything more than schoolboy playfulness. Going into middle school is when kids start playing games like truth or dare, and that’s when Vince really became interested in pushing boundaries. He learned to love the thrill of his friends all watching him as he nicked a candy bar than ran like crazy before he could get caught. After being dared to take a bong hit from some older kids in eight grade, he realized that getting high or drunk and partying could be just as fun and thrilling. Because he’s never caught getting into trouble, Vince’s parents don’t even realize the extent of what he does outside of school. They know he parties and gets a little crazy on occasion, but they don’t know that he’s the ring leader of that kind of behavior, and takes it a lot farther than most high school trouble makers. He’s lucky his mother hasn’t noticed the many girls he’s brought home on the weekends—fortunately their mansion is big enough that he can sneak them in and out.
