life
She just packed her bags one day. That selfish fucking bitch just packed her bags and left. She didn’t say goodbye, and she sure as hell didn’t come back. We thought she would; we thought maybe she was just trying to raise some cash, or needed a break. That she would show up in a week with a new fridge or a wad of cash, or something like that. Then two weeks passed. Then two months. Now it’s been almost three and there are two more kids, but not her. Yeah, so Da had gotten some other woman pregnant. So you leavehim. You don’t leave your children. You don’t leave eight kids in a rundown house with their alcoholic dead-beat Da who hadn’t given a dime to any of his kids in all their lives. Fuck, Da barely even lives here. He’s too busy sleeping at the bar and racking up debt. When he comes home it’s only to steal food and complain about how hard his fucking life is. Like he does anything at all to allow for complaints.
So what could I do? I dropped out of school, near the end of my junior year. Da got some other girl pregnant twice, but if you think she stayed around then you must not get how this works. She stayed just long enough to tell us how worthless us Fitzpatrick’s are, popped out her kids, and left them with me. If someone else leaves me with their goddamned baby I may just go on a rampage. Taking care of nine kids is more than enough for me, thank you very much. I barely have time to breath-to think. I barely have time to do anything these days. Da couldn’t care less. He doesn’t care about anything other than himself. He’d rather trick some poor lady into taking him in and feeding him than getting a job and taking care of his own brood. Worthless piece of shit. Not that I’m bitter or anything. Not at all.
I didn’t plan on loving _____ (2). I thought she would just be this lady’s kid that I wouldn’t care about. I mean, it was one thing taking care of all my full siblings that’d I’d grown up with. But some new half-sibling? Yeah, I’ve got enough on my hands, thank you very much. And then she was born. Those sweet little rosebud cheeks and that completely innocent helplessness. How could I not fall in love, with a little angel like that. God damn it, I didn’t want to care but when Eliza left her and her little brother, only a few months old… I knew it was over. I had two more kids on my hands and I was going to do my very best to take care of them. Do I regret the decision? Every single god-damned day. Would I change it? Not for the world. Those kids need me and there ain’t nothing I can do about it. Might as well accept what lot I’ve been given in this life.
What the kids don’t know is that I ran into Ma once. It was just a couple of months ago. She was at a gas station on the other side of town. It was obvious that she and the guy she was with were just passing through. I didn’t try to beg her back. It was pointless. We both knew there was no chance in hell she was coming back to do the job I had been doing for years. So I only asked her one question. ”How could you leave eight kids to fend for themselves?” I’ll never remember the deadpan tone in her voice when she said, I knew you would take care of them, Cath.” Those words haunt me every day.
