life
Maya didn't come into this world out of love. She came out of lust. Her parents had barely known each other before they went ahead and did the deed. However, coming from high-class families they were pressured into marrying each other. For awhile it was believed that they had grown to truly love each other. Maya was born into the perfect little family and had the happiest childhood a kid could want. Her mother and father were both extremely affectionate and caring. Since she was the only child, she was constantly the center of attention.
Although Maya wasn't aware of it, her parents started to have problems when she turned 12. Richard was a proud man and after he lost his job it became impossible to live with him. He resented Sophie for making more money than him and she resented him for not being appreciating her enough. By the time Maya was 13, they were happily divorced. Her dad took that as motivation and found a new job that required constant traveling. Her mom and friends were still in good old Portland and her dad never really spoke up about wanting her to live with him so she stayed.
After awhile, she spoke to her mom about missing him. They arranged things so that she would spend every other holiday wherever he happened to be at the moment. When visiting her dad, Maya got to travel all around the globe. It helped her become more social and learn how to deal with all different kinds of people. It also gave her an edge since most kids in school had never left the country.
During an especially long visit with her dad, her mom met someone else. When Maya got back, they were already engaged and she wasn't even asked for her opinion. The man her mom married happened to be David Huntington, the leading candidate for governor.
After marrying him, Sophie's life became revolved around him. She quit her high-paying job she claimed to love and devoted her life to becoming the perfect wife. Maya felt let down by her mom but never mentioned it. Instead, she strayed away from her once close-knit family and started to do things to get their attention. She didn't do things thinking: Oh, this will get their attention!, It was a lot more subconscious than that. She just needed to know that she mattered. Instead of being the friendly easy-going girl she once was, she began to change a lot.
Now it's her second year as a Royal. The power's gone to her head and she's handling things differently. She's tired of being the most hated out of the royals so she's planning on changing her her tactic and say she's changed. She'll be back pretending to be oh-so-innocent and ruthless behind your back. However, she's still a huge bitch to those that mean nothing to her.
Her step dad won the election and is really busy. He still hits Maya and her mom but a lot less than he used to. Maya is weaker than last but she's been doing a good job in pretending she doesn't have an eating disorder. She passed out at the end of last school year during math class but she paid off the nurse into telling people it was due to lack of sleep rather than lack of eating.

Maya reached into her pocket only to realize that she had forgotten her phone at home. She stomped in frustration, angry at herself for being so stupid. The girl was about to turn around, defeated, when she heard her name. For some reason her name never sounded as musical as when Jace said it, she recognized his voice right away, even before she saw him. Maya couldn't keep herself from smiling. His features became clearer and more defined as he approached her. Then he wasn't just a shape, a familiar figure, he was there, right in front of her, so close she could just stand on her tiptoes, lean over, and kiss his nose. Not that she would.
She noticed he was hurt, his jaw an angry red, his lip swelling up. "You came" The edges of his lips turned upwards happily, a crimson snake snuck out of the opening in his lips before he wiped it away. Maya's eyes widened instantly. She knew that Jace got into plenty of fights, it was one of the things that scared her before becoming friends with him, but she had never realized that he actually got hurt. She always pictured him as superman, unbreakable. "Are you alright?" They spoke the words in unison, their voices blending together like a hug or the chorus of a sad song.
After the incident with Ellie, nobody had bothered to ask her that. Nobody at all. Sure, her so-called friends did the loyal thing and picked Ellie apart behind her back, saying she should go back to Australia and that they hoped that Cameron got her pregnant as well, but they never asked her if she was okay. They didn't really care. Maya considered lying to Jace, just like she lied to herself, tell him she was great, couldn't be better, but she couldn't bring herself to say anything. It felt good to have someone worry about her. Then she felt awful, she didn't want Jace to worry, he had enough problems without adding a fat little freshman's woes. Instead she smiled, tight and sympathetic, urging him to be the one to talk.
There were goosebumps on her skin and she shivered a little but her focus was no longer on the cold. She was busy wondering what could have happened to Jace. Images of gangs, knives, and Rocky filled her head. She was frightened, all she wanted to do was wrap him up and keep him safe but she couldn't even keep herself safe. She searched his eyes, afraid of what she might find. His brown eyes were endless, like melted dark chocolate, shining with concern. "So what happened to you?" Her voice steady, seemingly friendly and light, hiding the turmoil she was under after seeing the blood splattered on his shirt.
"You know, when I was little I used to come here all the time." She commented after awhile, wanting to change the subject, her eyes dancing as she pulled out the cherished childhood memories. She skipped forward and motioned for him to follow her, stopping in front of a fountain. It wasn't on, the water was murky and clouded, like a million aspirins had been dissolved in it. But Maya still found it beautiful and peaceful as she looked down at all the sparkling coins scattered at the bottom of it, sunken treasures, wishes. "I'd throw pennies in there every time, making these ridiculous wishes." She laughed as she recalled the time she so desperately wished she could learn to fly. "They never came true, I always ran up to my parents and told them what I wished for." She said softly. It seemed like a million years ago when her parents were together, happy and in love. Maya turned around and looked at Jace, suddenly embarrased. Why was she even telling him this?
