Not only were you having to start all over but, you had to fill out a lot of paperwork. So here Jay was at Manchester Prep on a Wednesday afternoon in July because she was a new student. At least it was better than the public she had attended the last semester. She felt like it hadn’t taught her anything. She was glad to be starting new, even if it meant her redoing her sophomore year. It wasn’t like it was keeping her from graduating with all of her friends anyways. They were all back in Hawaii and would graduate the year before her. Sure she missed all of her friends, but there was no way that she was going to physically see them for a long while. Of course she skyped them and her brothers, but it wasn’t the same. She missed it there. The sand, the surf, the beach volleyball at any time in the year, the cook outs. It all just kept piling up and Maryland with its snow and cold could in no way compete. Alani made her way through the halls aimlessly. It was creepily dead. Of course it was. It was summer and Manchester Prep didn’t hold summer school. Or at least it didn’t seem like they did. That just meant she was out of luck because she had no idea where the office was. The more she walked, the more she felt turned around. The school was a lot bigger than her high school back in Hawaii. She guessed it was best to get lost now when she didn’t have to be scared of being late for class and no one was in the halls than on the first day of school. She could just imagine how many students went to the school. She bet that they weren’t all really close like they were back in Hawaii. No sir-e. She had heard rumors about the school and about how cliquey it was, but she wouldn’t know until classes resumed if they were true. Somehow she found herself in the auditorium. She honestly had no idea how she had ended up there, but when she saw someone on the stage she couldn’t really care. It was someone who might be able to give her direction on where to go. ‘Um…excuse me.’ she yelled out. ‘Can you tell me where the office is?’ Alani hated asking strangers for help. In fact Alani hated starting up conversations with strangers first. If they talked to her first she was fine, but she hated being the one initiating it. The whole thing made her anxious and she didn’t want to be rejected. |
