CHAPTER ONE *
Koda took a gulp of his Coca-Cola staring at the dinner table in front of him. Though his family was separated with mom being gone at work and dad being drunk at his job (most likely on the verge of being fired), at dinner they always sat at the table having a silent meal. If they had any conversation it was usually the very common "How has your day been?" type of small chat. Nothing too fancy. The Pierce family was not as close-knit as they were beforehand. The marking point of this downward spiral was when his father lost his job. Koda was younger, much younger. So young, you wouldn't recognize him because he lacked the snarky expression he carried around present-day. Being too young to understand, much of that time period when his family had nothing in their pockets was just a giant blur to small, childish Koda. He only remembered staying at his Aunt's house for a while until his mother decided to work because his dad had gotten used to several beers every night and could obviously not handle labor, much less work. The Pierce family would not be able to experience the lavish lifestyle they had before they were bumped down a social class or two. Even today, they struggled to hang on to the fair amount of money they could grasp. Then, of course, they earned enough money to afford their own small apartment and soon enough a less-than-petite house. But now they were in Ocean City, and that was a different story of its own.
Koda was sure never to bring up the past. It was a dangerous subject in this house, especially with his dad still drinking, which is why Koda avoided his family at all costs. The pulse through his veins pumped vigrously, though his body seemed cold. He wanted the words to ease out slowly, but they were chopped up and unnatural sounding. Dad...and...uhm..Mom. Remember...when we left...uhm Houston? Right? he had to take a gulp in before he could continue. His parents were both staring at him with very intent looks of awe, mostly due to the fact that the dinner table's silence had been broken by their son.
But his mom cut in, Um, yeah it was only a month ago Koda. Her smile had a senseless perk in it. But Koda continued with blue eyes full of anticipation. No. I mean what you said. How I had to be open to you and dad? Because you didn't want something like that happening again? They stressed this about a thousand times on the trip to Ocean City. They wanted Koda to tell them about his life and how he was doing in school and with friends before something terrible happened. They wanted him to be more informative about his situations at school so he wouldn't be forced out of another school by constant teasing and humiliation or so that's what he assumed. They would be sure to protect his son next time and even though they were a drifted apart family, he was very comforted by his family and was sure they would keep up to their promise. His parents shared a quick glance as if they had some secret parent language, and that was one of the hidden codes. His dad spoke. I thought when we got here, you said you wanted to ditch this subject and I quote 'forever'. But sure. Enlighten us, Koda. His voice was mellow. His father had very dull green, sunken eyes, that of a snake. His brown hair was fading into a light grey near the front. And he was far from balding because his shaggy hair was ready to whiplash the next person who came within three feet of him.
Koda felt himself fidgeting in his finger, tapping the table really fast. He could have sworn his parents could here his heart beating from where they were sitting. It was either he said what he had to say or runaway now. It was a hard choice but he decided to keep speaking. Well, I am seeing someone. His father smiled. And that's what you decided to announce at the dinner table and make some sort of hooplah about? So what's the lucky gal's name? Koda took a deep breath in seeing his dad was already assuming it was some girl. Dad, it's a guy and he's actually really nice. I think you might like him. Because I do. a hint of a smile appeard on his face. He's not bad and he's really trying to help me with the whole coming out situation. Really, he helped me come out to you guys right now. Once you meet him, you and mom are gonna...uhm...really like him. I'm sure of it. And...yeah. He gave a weak smile knowing Koda was not wrong when he said Sebastian was a kind guy. At heart he was. In case you didn't know, the last guy Koda was with in Houston told his best friend him and Koda were fucking. Being a bitchy cheerleader, she ratted it out to the whole school and outed Koda like it should have been the headlines in the news that morning. He was humiliated and scarred. Not to mention, the teasing that had followed. The only thing his parents knew was that he was being bullied to the point that he had to switch schools. Koda never told them why the bullying had started. He let them assume for themselves. Silence filled the vacant room. The dining room seemed empty now and the air seemed to suffocate those in it. His father wiped his mouth with a napkin, whiping off the sloppy mess of food crumbs and ketchup.
The boy felt his heart sink into his stomach, waiting for his parents' responses. Get out. his father said with a stern voice. Koda's slight smile faded away quick and his face grew white as if death itself were staring him in the eyes. Koda's mom stood up from her seat, collecting the dishes from the table and Koda's untouched meal. She was, in no way, wanting to stay in this room. Koda looked back as his mom, his last hope at the moment, left the room. What did his dad mean? Was he talking to her? But he was staring at Koda the entire time? Koda, I was talking to you. Get out of the house. Don't you hear me? I know I don't have a deaf son. he continued with no emotion in his voice. Koda 's eyes were desperate to find out what was going on. Listen your mom and I already talked about this Koda. We're not raising a gay son.
That last sentence was like a punch to the gut for Koda. Both of them agreed? No way, that couldn't be possible. Why would they both agree? Dad, why are you saying this? I remember you saying you were going to help me? You wanted me to tell you what's going and...and here I am....I'm telling you. his voice was shaky and cut off. Much softer than Koda's usual voice. It was seeking mercy. Any kind. You can't do this to me dad. He could feel his eyes ten times more moist than they had been before. His father picked himself out of his chair. We know it's just a phase you'll get over. You'll snap out of it once you realize it's breaking your family apart. And when you realize it, then you're free to come back. But not now Koda. His father's cold eyes made it hard to believe that this was really for Koda's benefit. Pushing the seat in, he walked over to Koda and grabbed Koda's arm and Koda tried to protest but he was yanked from the chair before he could say a work. Dad! Dad! I'm still you're fucking son, can't you see that. he tried to yell as his father maneuvered him into the room. His father's heard turned towards his son. Listen, you're gonna pack up and I'll let you take whatever you want. You just can't come back to this house until you tell us your little phase is over, okay?
Koda felt sick to his stoamch. Partly because of his confusion, the unpexpected had just happened, and because he was horrified of the thought of being alone. His so-called family had just rejected him. The only family he had. Dad, he began with a muffled voice, shaky and weakened by the tears now beginning to flow from his oceanic eyes, You can't. You can't do this to me...please don't... He reached his hand out for his dad, placing it on his shoulder, but he was quick to smack Koda's hand off his shoulder. His green, vacant, dull and sunken yes turned toward Koda. I'm giving you ten minutes Koda. His serious tone scared the living hell out of his son as he closed the door behind him and left Koda in the room to pack up his things. His blue pupils, a red hued sea surrounding them, gazed across the room. Sinister, perked against the wall, sitting in her corner. Koda stumbled to his bed before falling into it, feeling the need to sob but all emotions were ripped clean from his body. The tears were streaming down his face as he tried to recollect himself. Was he actually being kicked out? Was this really happening to him?
He wanted to fall asleep there because it was the closest he could get to dying for a second to forget about everything that had just happened, but before he knew it the door was slammed open again. Koda I gave you ten minutes, and all you did was fucking sob the entire time. TImes up. I gave you a fair warning. his father stood aside the door, leaving Koda room to walk by, yet Koda lied on his bed. Godammit, Koda. You're getting out of this house whether you like it or not! His dad walked over to the bed but before he could reach it, Koda hopped out of the bed and gave his dad a hug. An actual warming hug. Please, Dad, don't do this. he sniffled, I still love you and mom. Koda's dad was quick to break up the hug before he started pulling Koda by the shirt. With his fragile blue eyes, he gazed forward as his dad dragged him into the hallway. The kid wasn't sure to fight back or not. What would be the point in fighting back? By the looks of it, his dad would not be letting him stay so he'd be leaving the house sooner or later. By the time Koda and his dad were both facing the front door of the house, with dad's hand still clenched tightly to his shirt, the bright eyed boy suddenly got the instinct to struggle against his father's pull, but it was too late for that because the door was opened and Koda was pushed out of the door.
Dad...you can't honestly do this... the kid sounded like a very sad broken record, I don't even have anything...at least toss me some clothes or something. Koda didn't think he had ever cried like he had been right now. He wasn't easily hurt, but getting kicked out of your own house for being different was sure a chart-topper. The door was suddenly slammed without the kid being given some sort of response. Suddenly his palm slammed against the door. Well fuck you then! He made his way off the porch, looking back to see all the lights being turned off in the house. His eyes grew heavy, his heart seemed vacant, and the pulse in his body was no more. The silent night was all so captivating in the moment and the air was cool. He shouldn't have said anything. It was so stupid. How could he be so wrong?
Ocean City was this new life and so far it had all been going so well. Now the whole hallucination was shattered by the harsh reality check he was just given. His parents only thought it was a phase. Why would they pretend that they were supporting him then? He didn't try and get into their heads. His brain was pounding against his skull. The tears still in a constant motion down his cheeks. Wiping them away, he managed to get as far as the corner of his street before letting himself onto the ground and managing out a loud scream to the world. How unfair life was and how cruel some people could be to their own son. He didn't know. The usual fire that blazed in his bright blue eyes was extinguished as he felt the tears push against his eyelids. The boy was quite frankly tired of crying tonight, but he couldn't stop. He would turn to the only person he could trust right now. Feeling around his pockets, he found his phone (luckily enough he at least had that). Searching through his contacts, he found Sebastian's name. His fingers managed to type out a quick text:
hey sebastian. can you pick me up..i need a place to stay. it's kinda urgent. He didn't leave anymore detail than that. Stuffing his phone back inside his pocket. He could see his breath (which was much more calm than earlier) in the air floating up. Bending his kness, he lied himself with his back against the concrete sidewalk next to the Stop sign. He turned his head towards the street, watching a car every now and then pass by.

CHAPTER TWO *
Koda rolled over on the bed to face the guy next to him. It creaked a little, but not enough noise to wake his current partner. What an awful place. If Koda were sober, he would never lay a foot in a wasteland of an apartment like this. Not that he was the most tidy person alive, but what was he even doing here? He looked back at the slob who he happened to have spent the night with. His blue eyes, a bit dull from the hangover and headache, scannd over him. At least he was attractive. A little. He snapped his head the other way staring down at himself. The boy propped himself up on his elbows. He certainly couldn't feel any clothes on underneath. His skin was bare against the blankets, which meant they went all the way as normal. Well, sometimes, they didn't. Few times, they goofed around and managed to pass out before anything sexual could even happen. But today that wasn't the case, obviously. The kid sat himself up on the bed, letting his legs touch the floor, his hands on the corners, and his chest leaning forward and filling up with every slight, silent breath he breathed in, and then deflating with every breath that was released. He turned his head to look behind him at the drunken mess that layed there. He took the blanket and uncovered his lap, used to his own nudity by now and waking up to it. His slender legs stepped out as his body urched forward to lean and grab his own boxers. They were white like the sheets he sat on. Letting one leg, slide trough, then the other. He got up, with his dark hair a mess and his slender body scavenging for lost clothes. The shirt was always the tricky thing to find because it was always the first thing to come off and that could be anywhere. The boxers and pants however, were a quick find, seeing they were always near the bed. But this was excluding, socks, because Koda didn't really feel like searching for those little suckers, and he figured he would leave a neat souvenir for his one-night lover. With all his clothes on, he was ready to leave. His bright oceanic eyes peered across the room, catching a glimpse of the mane who lay without clothes underneath the covers. He had a nice build to him. Slender, probably a tad more muscle than Koda. Koda backtracked towards the bed next to his fling. He bent down, gave a kiss on the cheek, and continued back to where he found his shoes, one lying a few feet away from the other. Slipping them on, he paused, looked back at the guy, completely knocked out like an angel resting in hell. The stench of the place wasn't quite a blessing either. He sniffled a bit.
His head pounded as he walked out the apartment. The boy didn't even check what time it was but he was sure it was around midday. No way, he could've woken up early, as tired as he was now. His shaggy hair didn't really hide the fact that he was very active last night. Walking down he got a very disturbed look at the front desk which he quickly rebutted with a venomous glance. These blue eyes weren't meant to just be pretty. They were made to be deceiving and dangerous and above all intimidating. Opening the front door of the bulding, the light scorched his dull eyes. There was such a calmer atmosphere inside, but outside--the summers weren't very reserved and the excitement buzzed. It shook up his head. His breath wreaked of shame, alcohol, and desparation. Desperate to get home. Desperate to be alone. Desparate to be with someone. Desparate to have someone care. Desparate to not wake up in another guy's place. Desparate to get out of the mess that was currently his life.
The bus was always groggy when you were hungover. You didn't like or trust most of the people who were also riding it. Koda wasn't wealthy enough (even when he had two oh, so loving parents) to buy a car. The kid knew how to drive of course, but it wasn't in his best interest. He was comfortable of riding the bus in his daily routine, no matter how much he disliked the bus's atmosphere and customers. His head leaned against the window most of the ride back to Jamie's house. Not one person bothered him. Because you'd be an idiot to bother him. His entire posture, facial expression, the entire aura that surrounded the kid. It wreaked and people could smell his melancholia from miles away. He snapped out of the small trance he was in and whipped his head up as the bus stopped.
Opening the door with the spare key he had, he peered into the house. There were no cars in the driveway, but he wanted to be completely sure that the Erikson parentals didn't find him. He put Jamie through enough, and having them realize that their son was sneaking in another boy would get Jamie into shit he didn't deserve. He continued, making silent footsteps. He couldn't here a thing. No one here. Going up the stairs, he headed straight for the bathroom. Koda wanted to cleanse himself and get rid of the disgusting feeling that he hid in the pit of his stomach. The boy grimaced. He could only wash the filth on the exterior. Before taking off his clothes he started a nice bath with warmer water. After stripping, just as he did the previous night, he let one leg in and the other, and slid his body down against the bathtub. Letting out a sigh of relief, he could feel himself loosening up on his muscles that had been so tense this entire morning. At least the guy was cute, he thought. He just needed to empty out his head from the disaster that currently filled it. It must've been a chaotic mess up there because he closed his eyes tight, not letting a hit of blue show in between those eyelashes of his. Oh god, he though, here they come. The damn emotions he always tried to hide. Solitude was his worst friend. He loathed it as much as he enjoyed absence of others. He needed something and he didn't know what/ Another beer, maybe? Holy fuck, are you kidding me Koda.
He let his head sink into the water. His hair all drenched now. He opened hi eyes underneath. The broken light shown through the surface of the water and met his eyes underneath. Those blue eyes wavered in the current of the tub water that was made when he splashed his head underneath. And the boy's head drifted underneath for about a minute until he felt the urge to breath again, to let another breath in no matter the repercussions and no matter how much it hurt that emoment to know his parents loathed him for liking a certain gender and no matter how much it hurt that he screwed up his only pseudo-successful relationship. Everything would be alright, afterwards. So he lunged his head forward and gasped for a breath of air and choked on it so much that he could feel the tears for as he did. He didn't like his new life. It consisted of a drunken mess and sleeping with strangers and no matter how much he lied to himself, that wasn't the life he needed. But he loved it so much. Becuase every night he was out with a guy, he had someone to hold him for once and that's all he needed. Just someone to pull him through the next night. So he convinced himself, he was doing alright. This lifestyle was okay. He sank into the water again after being upright. His head against the end of the tub, his knees bent out of the tub in the middle and his feet tucked into it. And he cried for a first time since he drunkenly ran into Jamie Erikson at that stupid party with those stupid people. And it reminded him of that night. And how he embarrassed himself by chucking up seconds on the poor kid.
And after the half hour bath, he dried himself off, and shimmied into his boxers. He fell asleep on Jamie's bed. It was so comfortable and had a delightful smell. He was lured into it.So his head rested, eyes closed, legs and arms sprawled out under the covers. He was sure Jamie would find him first and make sure no one else saw him in there. He was an amazing friend like that. Lord knows why, though.
